How to create a Standard Page

If you haven't yet given your site a name and a description, please do so before trying to create any pages.

Any link on the My Web Pages menu (left) will take you to the control panel for your site (pictured below).

Step one: click on the Create New Page icon.  This, (unless you deliberately change the option in the dropdown) will take you into the place to create a Standard web page.

Click inside the large blank area and write whatever you fancy.  As I've probably said elsewhere, it's just like writing in a Word document.  Other members are likely to look at your web pages to find out a bit more about you so why not answer the questions, about yourself, that you would like to know about them (if you know what I mean). Whatever you write, at this point, it doesn't really matter because the idea, here, is just to become familiar with the "workings" of the thing.

Step two: when you're finished writing, click on SAVE (top right).  That's it. Smile

OK, I suppose there is a bit more to making web pages but that's the most important bit and the best tip I can give is to do no more than that just now.  When you want to get a bit more creative in terms of formatting and layout, go ahead and experiment but, right now, just write something and then SAVE it.

N.B. don't type for longer than 20 minutes without clicking on SAVE.

Short explanation: you'll lose everything you've typed and have to start again.

Long explanation (for people like me who need to know these useless things):
On this type of web site, there's a security feature that will timeout your session if it looks as if nothing is happening.  Even although you're typing text, you're only really working inside your own computer's browser window so, as far as the web site knows, you could have walked off and left the computer unattended.  It's only when you click a button (like SAVE) that there's any communication between your computer and the site and it's only when you click SAVE that your work gets sent to the server.

What's a session? It's a special relationship between the web site and your own computer. In this case, while your session is active, you can get in and change stuff on the web site.

What's a timeout?  It's a special relationship between you, personally, and the web site, whereby, fortunately, the web site cannot hear your expletives.

The page editor toolbar (pictured above) is a bit like the toolbar in a Word document. While you're creating or editing your page, you'll find that if you mouse-over each icon on the toolbar, you can see what it does. Don't be afraid to experiment.
