Tips : Personal Pages Tips

Uploading Images

When you click on the "insert image" button (bottom row), you can browse to any folder on your own computer and select the image you wish to upload. Be careful to go to the folder in which the image actually resides. You might, for example, have a shortcut to that image on your desktop but the image is actually located in My Documents. Don't try to upload the shortcut; browse to the My Documents folder and select the image itself.

Inserting Links

If you want to link some text to, for example, a favourite web site, all you have to do is select the text and then click the "insert link" icon (end of 2nd row). Write (or paste the URL into the dialogue and click OK. When someone clicks on your link, however, they will be taken away from your web page, possibly never to return Cry so... before you OK the link dialogue, you'll see the word Target and, beside it, a drop-down that says, "Open link in the same window." Choose the other option that says, "Open link in a new window," and then click OK. That way, when someone clicks on your link, it will open a new browser window and, sooner or later, when they close that window, they will find that your page is still open in the original window. This, by the way, is not a trick to force people to come back to your site; it's actually a courtesy. People often follow a link out of curiosity but had no intention of leaving the original site.

Linking to your Forum Profile

Once your Personal Pages are ready, you can put a link to your site in your Forum profile. In your Personal Pages control panel...

  • click on Manage Pages (top right)
  • you'll now see a list of all of your pages (something like that above)
  • if, for example, you want to link to your Photo Gallery, right-click on the view icon for that page and select copy shortcut (Internet Explorer) or copy link location (Firefox)
  • go into the Forum
  • click on Profile in the horrible "Home Help Search Profile My Messages Members Logout" section (we'll have to fix that).
  • on the Modify Forum Profile menu, click on Forum Profile Information
  • scroll down to the Website URL input box, place the cursor inside the box and press Ctrl+V to paste the address of your page into the box
  • write a Site or Page Title in the box above and then click Save.
