Travelling Fairs
«

Was watching 'How We were' on TV tonight and they were showing scenes of the visiting Fair in Boston Market Place in the 1950's I used to love the travelling fair when I was a kid.
Has soon as they arrived on our local park we would go and see if we could help set up, they used to give you free ride tickets if you helped them. My favourite ride was the whip, there was a peddle on the car floor if you pushed it with you foot as it swung you round and released it the car would whip round really fast. I also liked the speedway and the Cape walk, though i didnt care for the waltzes that spun you round and round lol.
The music was great especially the Rock n Roll tunes, we used to love Jerry Lee lewis's 'Great balls of fire and little richard's tutti Fruity. But the sound i loved the best was Johnny and the hurricans 'Rocking Goose'.
In my teens we would go once a year to Nottingham's Goose Fair.. I used to love to sample the food there.. my favourite was Mushy Peas and Mince sauce and Candyfloss (strange you never see anyone eating candyfloss these days lol.
Happy Days

The first time my oldest lad had a candy floss he dusted the floor with it.
I think it comes in bags now not twirled round on a stick.

I love to watch the film Saturday Night and Sunday morning. Part of the film is shot on location at Nottingham's Goose Fair.

I remeber the fairs(we called em feasts) when every village had a feast week.Saturday morning the traction engines pulling the trailers with all the feast stuff on em would parade through the village, then they went to the field where the feasters worked like mad to get everything running before pub closing time.
there were coconut shys, skittles, darts, roll a penny, dodgems, chair a planes and many more things. It stayed a week then went to another village.

Hi Val
It seems a thing of the past now for many reasons
it just doesnt excite the kids anymore
and the animals...........should they really be there ?
I used to like it at one time but there was nothing else.

I dont agree with animals being used, except the horses, it was good to watch the acrobats jumping on and standing on thier hands on the horses. I wont be going to this one.
