Steam !!!! Although I have wonderful childhood memories of the old steam trains, once I had left home (Bedford) I always knew I was home as I walked across he bridge at Bedford St Johns Station. The hissing steaming beast that had pulled us all the way down from Scotland rested her weary head underneath the foot bridge, and it seemed to me that she was sighing her relief that her toils for that day were nearly over. The smell of hot steam, coal smoke, and the hot oils were to me something to savour as I knew I was home again.

As I exited the station and looked back the shining monster was just pulling away for the final 50 miles to London St Pancras, two or three great puffs of smoke, a shrill whistle, and the beast struggling to bring life to its driving wheels and she was away.

"Those were The day's my friend, I thought they'd never end" --- Do you recall that Song ??

There are many more 'steam enthousiasts' now, than there ever was and no complaints about any dirty clothes. I believe that a brand new steam train, has recently been built (seem to recall a two page article in the mail ??
I also note Today, that we now have a 'Bullet train' similar to the japanease one.

Pheonix?Huh? How many years ago did you travel through Bedford. I was back there last March visiting my Brother. If there is any special part of Bedford that you would like a picture of I will get him to send it to me for you.

Hi Chris,   Bedford was sometime in the 1970s. lived in Wilstead and then Marston Mortaine, while working at vauxhalls, in press tools. Life was busy.Cannot recall much about Bedford,(except the two Rivers)possibly because we moved around, following the good jobs and salaries.

Hi Pheonix, Marston Mortaine is where my Aunty Betty lives, as Childern we used to go over there every fortnight to visit. Also can you remember the chimney's at Stewartby, sadly they have all gone, as a Child I remember them billowing out sulpher smoke that spread all over Bedford and surrounding areas.
