I must admit it also changes colour with the sun and sometimes looks quite beautiful.

I feel that for windfarms, solar heating, insulation and Mr Broon it is a matter of too little too late. If a concerted effort had been made to address the West's vulnerability to reliance on the energy resources belonging to what can now only be called the enemy I doubt that tehe opportunists who are now getting rich on our vulnerability would never have happened. It is cleverly orchestrated that the alternatives to essential needs like fuel, heating and shelter are equally if not more expensive or less reliable. Let nobody ever believe that the first obligation of governments is to the people, they are way down the list. At least America are now addressing their needs and vulnerability where energy needs are concerned, with alternative energy sources and properly organised and subsidised transportation systems. Some cities even have dedicated cycle lanes. I fear that Mr Broon's answer to saving energy is little more than advising us to live in one room, huddle together for warmth and when we take our socks off then stuff them under the door to keep the draught out. That he is a useless Prime Minister is nevr in doubt, the frightening thing is that he had aplied his incompetance for us as Chancellor for so long. He lacks everything, from ability to confidence, charm and enthusiasm for the job he is supposed to be doing. The sad thing is that in spite of his performance it is true that "In the valley of the blind .....

I recall when Tony Blair narrowly managed to hang on to power at the last election he said that their biggest mistake had been to fail to listen to the will of the people yet his successor does not even listen for it. Perhaps we need a solar powered Prime Minister, up until now he has only been powered by wind.
Have a great weekend all.

Hi John, Well stated and all true!!  You sure have the right attitude about life and people's feelings. Has even been mentioned that The police are there to protect the state and not the people -- How do they work that out??
'Confucious' -- Him say why bother, maybe he is right ??

I think we could respect Brown a little if he would only stand up and defend himself a little, all he does is say that he is "getting on with the job" and I can think of many figures in history that considered that they were doing the same. There is a court in the Hague specially for them.

We have been ejjoying learning more about Britain, the land of the paradox. If you receive an old age pension then you are taxed on it and if you took steps to prepare fr your retirement and thus not become a burden on the state then you will be taxed at a higher rate. If however you don't work, drink your normal dole money and claim benefits, whatever you receive will be tax-free!!!

Here is another one. If like us, we have lived a frugal if happy life, left John Barleycorn for the pleasure of the leisure seekers and return to Britain to retire with thwe proceeds of the sale of your home, you might think that you could bank the money, get a little part time job and use the interest on your money from the house to rent a luittle place. Well, it is not so simple, the money you earn from your investment is heavily taxed and will reduce the earnings from it enough that your part time job will need to become a full time job. If, however, you enter into the dubiously advantageous world of Shared Ownership the reduction in rent paid plus the fact that you are now NOT taxed on the benefit of your money is a better proposition. BUt it doesn't end there. If you make sure that you now have less than 16,000 left over then the government will pay you for your wisdom in saving AND give you a credit on any Council Tax that you pay. You also become eligible for a whole host of other tax credits, we can get mone for looking after granny, and I can even claim money on the grounds that my minor stroke prevents me from supplementing my pension income. What is the point of one trying to work or trying to save?? And to think that these rules apply not only to the wholse country but to every itinerent Armenian carpet peddler and Somalian bead driller who can get themselves up the beach.

Really, we are floored. Old-fashioned skills like being able to use hand tools, file flat and square, use a micrometer and mark out from a datum face are no longer required (Don't worry, Phoenix knows what I am saying) because all rhat is needed now is skill in the art of filling in forms to claim benefits. My one friend, the one who sweeps up in the pub, not the one with the free flat next to one, says life has never been so good. He has a free council retirement cottage, goes fly fishing on the Test and takes holidays in Portugal. The government keeps complaining about benefits abuse but does nothing about it.

Oh well, that is my moan for the day, back to the workshop, I have a machine to finish.

Have a good week, all.

John, don't you exaggerate a bit. I'm not acquainted with the English conditions of life, but I have worked some time in the German department for social welfare. If you live on income support and don't do "illicit work" you can't afford any holidays in Portugal and you aren't allowed to have a car of your own. The amount of money you receive is just enough to live on. You have problems in getting a flat to live in, because the landlords don't want to rent to people receiving income support, although the rent is often paid directly to the landlord by the social welfare department.
To be honest - I never would have wanted to change place with one of them and I prefered to work in a so-called low-paid job.

I have yet to find any 'points' that I do not agree with, what John is stating!!  He is a man after my own heart and with similar standards. It was not so difficult, to see the way of change affecting this country, even from the end of the 60s. too the 70s. then 80s. It's arrived!!
The only way  a politician can 'defend' themselves, is by saying they made a mistake ??  Have you ever heard them say that ?? No and you never will -- because they don't make mistakes ??----  Keep on going John!!  saves me posting so much!! "The Truth and nothing but The Truth" !!

Hi John
Would you not be better off staying where you are ?
You now have a new prime minister, and things might pick up,and also you have been 40 years there wont you lose your pension ?,or will they tranfer it ? you will only get £30 a week for granny carers allownace, not a lot is it ? I am not too sure you will get it either with her being french, they might say she has a french pension.....let them pay it ! who knows. Our government is waking now slowly..very slowly.
They might say if Jackie and her mother are french, let the french keep them ! But we wont we never do its a free for all here, nobody questions how long you paid it in, if at all !most countries you have to pay for 5 years before you can get the benefits, but not here,so come on over everybody else is !
no offence meant to you personally !

lol...I agree Mac, I think the government are very slowly seeing that come one come all, doesn't work so as Mac says if you want to come, do it now before things change and keep a close eye on the situation because I've a feeling a big clamp down will happen. A lot of people don't like the overcrowding and new houses we're having to build to accomodate everyone, many more and we'll sink.

They did on the news last night, they said it all started in suburban America, too high mortgages and loans being sold off so now they don't know who they belong to and banks not trusting each other, it all sounds a bit of a mess, apparently the depression came right after the last crash but lets keep hopeful, it will pick up.

At the beginning of the year we had some reports on German TV abour America. They said that the majority of the Americans has a lot of debts - they just apply for a loan and when they realise they can't pay it back, they apply for a new loan to pay it back etc. etc. Moreover, what's really strange, the Chinese and other countries buy these private loans, so in some way they are controlling the American finances, too. When the crisis in America started, they were of the opinion that much depended on the owner of these private loans.
