I was born in Torquay and in 1950 a film was made called "The Last Holiday" with Alec Guinness, Sid James and several other well known faces has anyone ever seen it, I have a good tale to tell about that one. Wink

once upon a time there was a film crew who desended on the lovely holiday resort of Torquay in South Devon, a resort used by the retired and refined, where one drank tea out of chia cups with their little pinkie sticking  out (why did they do that I have always wondered) anyway,

whoops you'll have to wait I have to get tea see you soon, don't go away.

Hi Herbertina

Are we gonna have a series of three hourly episodes.

I love it Grin. Just like on the old radio but in text. Great stuff!

Herbentina, Little 'pinkies' ??  My second wife use to do that, when we had afternoon Tea out in hotels. She was sort of middle class and enjoyed Earl Grey,  Dargeeling and Lamsam sushon. That little pinkie always stood out. Roll Eyes

morning you remember I said I could clear a pub in 30 seconds flat with one of my stories, well I could make them last for half and hour, just by going off on another subject, or "just a minute I'll be back" and go off and serve other people.

Last Holiday Wilfred Hyde White, Kay Walsh, Bernard Lee, it was a lovely story about a hotel and the Torquay backdrop was beautiful.

also in this film was a rather formidable lady know as Madam Kirkwood-Hackett, she played a smallish role of one of the elderly ladies, a talking part.

My father ex-RAF was from Dubllin one of 4 sons, he was son No 3 and he and my Mum met during the war when she was only 17 and within 6 weeks were married.

Must dash, his nibs will want his breakfast.

Herbentina, Tch! Tch! Such Tactics. Grin Grin  but having used them myself, on extreme rare occassions of course. Grin --
Entering a group in conversation, joining in and systamatically -- changing the topic of conversation without an 'item' being mentioned, can work wonders when an argument is in progress and so 'dilutes' the heated chat. ??

Right Madam Kirkwood-Hackett also came from Dublin, well originally from Great Yarmouth and Dublin through marriage, she did a lot of work with the Abbey theatre and wrote childrens stories, also a fair bit in films, anyway she also visited us whilst she was filming in Torquay  she was in fact my Grandmama, my claim to fame, not really she actually insisted my parents move to Dublin with her, but she didn't bank on there being another Diva in the family my Mothers mothers (my darling Nanny) surfice to say Nanny won.

Dad however returned to Dublin, and then about 6 years ago I had an appeal out on dads squadrons website and I got this email from a lady listing all the family, she turned out to be my dear cousin Bev and my family has grown to 8 cousins and their families most of whom live in Canada and one still lives in ireland.

hows that for a tale or two.

actually I thought that last post of mine,  what a numptie I had always wanted to be an actress in the blood see, and I use to embarrass my Mum when getting on the buses I would make everybody wait whilst I got my fairies on, or else I would announce to all and sundry "I'm Fay I'm 5 and I'm going on the stage" ahh how sweet especially as I was 15 at the time. no seriously I was a precosious ( is that the spelling) little brat, but my passion was the stage never got there but we all have our dreams.

My son and daughter-in-law bought me a collection of Alec Guinness films including "The Last Holiday" very Margeret Rutherford my Grandmama

You know I have come to realise what a lovely forum this is thank you Tilly, Definately Gene Kelly, I use to do tap dancing, couldn't sing, it's amazing when you talk to people how many like us harbour dreams like that acting dancing or singing but never realise them, so we aren't alone, one things for sure we would probably have knocked them dead if we had trodden the boards. Going back to those good old film stars. I loved dancing so much, that I have wished to dance like Fred Astaire, with his Ginger Rogers and other partners. A long while ago of course, when I was lighter on my feet. I did watch a video not too long ago, of Fred and varius partners, what a thrill !!

Oh you have done it now, I was reading all these posts earlier on, do you remember those beautiful floaty dresses of Ginger Rogers, as a little gilr I would imagine having one of those and dancing downstair cases, I could do really high kicks, but it was the dresses, funny what we would find so fasinating as a child  Wink
