Herbentina, The blessing of Old Age, is that we have been brought up with Standards and Disapline. Both, sadly lacking Today. There are so many 'single mothers' and they expect every little bit of help there is. The problem is, they get it. It's really so Kind of the government to Give them everything they need - Using Our Money. Most have never worked or intend to work for anything. As for any 'manners'
do they have any. -- I am Glad it was Not like that in 1953. We had Children because We Wanted Them. Not just for the Income.

I had my two in 68 and 70 both were brought up to work for what they wanted and grateful for what they had and they haven't let me down.

I may be wrong but I believe that successive Governments gave away benefits to all and sundry as vote catchers, now this one about young mothers must look for work as soon as their youngest is at school, or lose their benefit, yea right, as soon as their youngest is due to start school, don't want to work so lets have another baby, am I right?

Maybe we should push the Governments and the political parties to get back to the old values, where as you say perfectly "we had children because we wanted them not for an income"

I don't trust the institutions with getting your credit rating right anyway. We always pay off any expenses every month, the interest becomes bigger than the debt if you don't and thankfully we are debt free. Like Cath we were taught if you haven't got the money then you don't have the goods, its paid off, we obviously used to have a mortgage, we couldn't afford to pay cash for the home but anything in it if we needed major repairs we took out a loan to cover it and made sure it was paid in full.We were lucky, which you need as well, in having employment to pay off things.

I do so agree about having children because you want them, they aren't a commodity but a blessing or a curse depending on the children. Grin

I should have added, that in 1953/4 there was no child support for the first child, only for the second and as my wife lost two by caesarian, we adopted a few years later.
Neither adults or children are a commodity, although as a mass, they have been called that. --- Had a shock this morning. A letter from our building society, stated that my account may have been 'compromised' -- panic set in. Shocked Shocked But a phone call and I agreed the cancellation of my card etc; No other details given at this time.

That can be panic stations, hows this for a good one, because Paul can't get around a lot, we buy several things on line, new mattress the company we used were brilliant, anyway I went to pay by card it wouldn't go through three times on line on the phone, so I had to go into the bank they phoned their head office, I had never spent this amount before so they were being careful, I thought that was brilliant, and thanked them for looking after me ike that. was I annoyed no not at all, old fahsioned service in a technical world.

We have talked about customer service how?s this for a real corker.
2006 we were living in town not here in the village; at the front of the house was a busy roundabout but the back a dead end for cars and a walk through for pedestrians. One evening a group of about a dozen kids no older than 14 all drunk  congregated outside out back gate, now Paul was still poorly with a heart problem and our next door neighbour had just developed Bells Palsy so neither fella was tip top.
999 only for life and death situations, all other calls for the police the central call centre, so the call went something like this

Devon and Cornwall Police

Can we have the police round here please (I gave my name address and most important Post Code) we have a group of youngsters outside all drunk and two of them are actually having sex up against our fence

Name and address please

I have just given them to you, but I do it again can you send someone round pretty sharp my neighbour is going out and he isn?t a well man

Tell your neighbour to keep in and can I have your name and address

I have just given you my name and address twice, my sick husband has also gone out and I need an officer here now.

There is now need to talk to me like that (call disconnected)

999 can I have the police within two minutes the matter had been dealt with.

I did complain about it, if it had been  a complaint about a dishwasher or washing machine I would expect bad service but the Police Control !!!

Now If you had said 'you think one is waving a gun around' the police would not have asked for your address more than once and a car would possibly be there, Before the call had been disconnected.
