Unions are balloting 20,000 key Network Rail signal staff, maintenance workers and supervisors in a row over jobs and working conditions.
Results are due this Thursday, Friday and next week and are expected to endorse the call by unions the RMT and TSSA for industrial action.
Network Rail say they must make changes to the industry, including axing 1,500 maintenance jobs. They say some working practices are 50 or 60 years old ?and date back to the age of steam?.
NR denied union claims that safety standards were being impaired by the changes. A spokesman said: ?Safety is always at the top of our list both for passengers and staff.?
