The snooper's census: 2011

Ministers are being accused of planning to snoop into citizens' private lives in the most intrusive national census ever carried out.
The 2011 survey will demand to know how many bedrooms there are in homes and detailed information about any 'overnight visitors'.
Other new questions include how well respondents can speak English, what kind of central heating they have installed, whether they have a second home, how they define their national identity and whether they are in civil partnerships.
The Conservatives said the attempt to find out sleeping arrangements was particularly objectionable.
The demand for the number of bedrooms in each home, coupled with a requirement to give the name, sex, date of birth and address of any overnight visitors, amounted to 'bedroom snooping', they said.

This is disgusting, or are they just trying to keep records for future generations?

This interests me because ive done my family history, and being of the travling kind any information i got was of inportance , i found them only in 1901 census , but relations of theres were Visiting on another census, it would have helped if there address was included, it did give what relation they were to the people they were visiting , which confirmed stories id heard .
So giving some details of others in the house is not new , Frankly we all write our own census now , so it dont matter what you put down , if you have a lover or eligale lodger , your hardly likely to put that down. as to the amount of bedrooms , im sure we filled in one years ago that had to have measurements of each room .
Census gives a overall not accurate view on the country/household , the amount living in unheated houses , and such , Whos in work , or on benifits

Indeed a very interesting thread.
We are at the end of the day being snooped on in every day things we do, or in some cases dont do.
I have nothing to hide and to that end I will answer the questions posed, but if there are any that I feel go over the limits of decency then I will leave it blank.
I have no reason to stop people knowing that I live in a thirteen beroomed mansion and that I have the Lord Mayor of London stay over on the odd occasion when he wants a break from his cushy job.
No doubt the information that one gives will be made available to all and sundrie in India in the very near future so that they can sell it on so that we are each cloned and you land up with two of each of us living in the UK, one (you or I ) that has paid his taxes etc, and the other living off the state (Them).

Probably !
I think the true Brits of this country are fairly honest,I wonder if there is another way of doing it,like Family allowance ,pensions, benefits, tax, surely this would cover most people.
But hey what do we know ?

The Truth is what you want to believe in.
Honesty is something that you hope you are, and wish that others were the same.

Chris, Thanks for your answer. It would appear, that"Truth" as we know it, just does Not excist.
"Honesty" is shown by those who 'lead' to be pure unadulterated fantacy, which has deteriated over the last decade or so. Just how low, can our standards sink

Does anyone really believe this will be accurate in this day and age ?
I sure as hell dont !
how many are going to tell the truth about where they are on that day/night.
How many will actually know where they are on that day or night ?
Not the ones just arriving by lorry.
Not the ones already here illegally,so lets cut our losses and forget it,put the money it is going to cost back in the coffers, and give us all a tax rebate !

Long gone are the days when people respected anything the government said and if it had to be done we did it, the fear of punishment was enough. I'm as confused as the next person who to trust now, certainly not our elected so called leaders. How do we know the things they can get from a census, like identity fraud won't be abused. I don't trust whoever it is on the receiving end and it does make you a bit wary putting anything down. I agree Cath, scrap it.
