Leeks - beginners guide

Hello. I hope someone can help me here. Decided to start some leek seeds off indoors in seed trays & sparingly planted some on 19th Feb. They started to shoot quite quickly and now they are about 2" in height. They are obviously very thin but seem to be close together and wondered when I should transfer them into separate pots. Never having done this before, I am completely ignorant and the seed packet doesn't help much. I intend to transfer them to grobags when they are bigger - I don't have much of a garden really. maybe somebody can give me some advice. I would be very grateful for any replies. thanks

Hello and welcome Pat,i doubt if you will have much success with leeks in grow bags. The convential way is to dip a hole in the soil, drop in the leek plant and water in.
I dont think the soil in grow bags is deep enough, but could b wrong.i will certainly be interested to see how you get on in grow bags.

hello William. how nice of you to reply so quickly. I certainly did wonder about the depth of grobags for leeks but it says on the packet they can be successfully grown like this.....so we will see. maybe I'll get baby leeks! do you have any ideas about the spindly shoots & when to transfer them into different pots? Regards Pat

Hi Pat, the golden rule of transplanting is, do it when they
have grown two sets of leaves and only handle the plants with he first set f leaves, because they are going to fall of anyway. Most gardeners have their own way of doing things, only experience can teach you. dont forget to keep me informed of the progress.

Hello Pat, Grow bags never seem to have enough soil in them,so normally we use Troughs for extra depth and potting compost as soil, whatever we grow. Having given up using seed as it is not easy to sow thinly to alieviate an early transplant. Hope that you are successful and enjoy the pleasure of watching them grow, Big and Healthy.

thank you Phoenix for your posting. I think I will use troughs or some large pots I have in the garden. Because I have never done anything like this before, I am quite excited really! I've planted some peppers from seeds too but they are stronger so I think I might get better results with these. One can only try. hope to meet you again on here sometime.

So you get out there and enjoy. The pleasure will follow quite Quickly!!

thank you for your encouragement and yes, I do hope this will grab me and I will want to do more. I'm even thinking of getting a greenhouse!! but will curb the urge at the moment to see how things go. nice to hear from you. One thing....can't understand why my username is being shown as lewis on the "who's online" section rather than "pat". my surname is lewis but when I post it always shows as my first name.

Hi Pat, Yes!! Stifle the growing 'urge' for the moment, about getting a greenhouse. Be sure of what you want to actually Do?? and how much time you wish to spend on your new hobby!! it can become very 'adictive' -- There is a gardening programme somewhere on computer, if it will help ?? Put it in your browser. Have wonderful Fun!!

Hi Pat, have you transplanted those leeks yet, you will nit regret getting a greenhouse, it will bring you hours of joy and relaxation, plus a bit of frustration. One thing for sure is, no matter how big it is, it wont be big enough.

Hi Pat have been watching your post with interest as I have been bitten by the gardening bug. Now that I'm retired I have more time, I would also like a greenhouse but even second hand ones aren't cheap(can't afford a new one). Have been bidding on ebay but they go above my price range.
