Karen Matthews and Michael Donovan
Matthews and Donovan kept Shannon "drugged and subdued"
The mother of Shannon Matthews has been jailed for kidnapping her own daughter in an attempt to claim reward money.
Karen Matthews, 33, and her co-accused Michael Donovan, 40, were earlier found guilty of kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.
Both were jailed for eight years by a judge at Leeds Crown Court who said the offences were "truly despicable".
Shannon was held at Donovan's flat in Batley Carr, West Yorkshire, for 24 days.
The judge, Mr Justice McCombe, said: "The offences that you committed were truly despicable.
"It is impossible to conceive how you could have found it in you to put this young girl through the ordeal that you inflicted upon her.
"It is incomprehensible that you could have permitted your friends, neighbours and in your case, Matthews, even your children to sacrifice time and energy in extensive searches for the supposedly missing child."
[Shannon] appeared to relive her experiences and she often complained of having nightmares where she is being tied up
Judge, Mr Justice McCombe
The judge said it was doubtful Matthews and Donovan could have planned and carried out the kidnap without other people.
He said: "Having regard to their low intellect... it must be doubtful whether they could have conceived or continued these offences without the assistance or connivance of others.
"The pre-sentence report in Matthews' case comments that neither defendant seems to have the cognitive ability to devise and orchestrate such an elaborate offence with any degree of likelihood of success."
Shannon, now 10, went missing on 19 February as she walked home from school.
During the trial, the jury heard pair Shannon was "drugged, subdued and hidden from the public" so the defendants could claim reward money.
She was found in Donovan's flat, hidden in in the base of a divan bed, less than a mile from her home, on 14 March, following a ?3.2m police investigation.
Shannon Matthews
Shannon Matthews went missing on her way from school in February
The judge said that although Shannon was not physically harmed, her experience must have been "highly disturbing".
He said: "It is clear as a matter of common sense that it must have been highly disturbing to a nine-year-old child to be removed suddenly from her normal environment... without knowing when, if at all, she would be returned."
Reading from the report about Shannon's recovery, he said: "She appeared to relive her experiences and she often complained of having nightmares where she is being tied up."
He said she would need to undergo psychotherapy sessions.
Media 'hysteria'
In mitigation for Donovan, Alan Conrad QC, told Leeds Crown Court the barristers in the case had a combined legal experience of more than 100 years but none had come across a case like it.
Frances Oldham QC, for Matthews, said her client had committed "serious offences" but she criticised the media "hysteria" that followed her conviction.
Verdict on Shannon case
Making reference to a comment by Det Supt Andy Brennan, who condemned Matthews as "pure evil", Ms Oldham said: "[This] is the one thing she is not."
The barrister said Matthews had been isolated in prison because of how she had been portrayed and had received no visitors except for her lawyers.
Ms Oldham said: "She is not Myra Hindley, she is not Rose West."
Det Supt Andy Brennan, the officer who led the investigation, said the case was now closed.
He said: "If new evidence comes to light, it will of course be investigated.
"We considered all the evidence, including what Shannon said, with the CPS and concluded there was not sufficient evidence to charge anybody else."
........................
I personally think justice has been done ...but also i do hope she never gets her children back ....
This women is evil ..sick ... an unforgivable

Yes Joe I have followed this one with some interest. Now yo say that you think justice has been done ?? I remember some few years ago a Father extracted his Daughter from his ex wife as he believed that his daughter was being abussed buy his ex's new partner, not sexually but mentally and physically. He had approached the Social services and expressed his concerns over a period of time and they done nothing.
Evidentialy he had spoken to his Daughter about it and she had confirmed that this person had hit her on more than one occassion. So instead of returning her to her Mother he let her stay at his house.
This man was eventually arrested and charged with abduction and sent to prison for 10 years. After 18 months he was released, because his fears were proven when his daughter finally went to Social services and made a complaint that was followed up, the other chap was given a life sentence.
In this case (Matthews) I dont think that the sentence was harsh enough, to do that to your own Daughter was below contempt, and to me at least a life sentece was in order. As it stands this bitch will be out in four years.

Shannon will have a better life without her around, however long she does inside I hope she is never allowed to have contact with kids, justice has been done in that she has been found guilty I think its probably doing her a favour to be locked up away from the public's anger, no responsibilities, everything done for her, whatever our views we're agreed she is evil.

Evil !!!! I am thinking of a stronger word but for the life of me I cant remember it.
Yes GUILTY she is, and the system is also guilty of handing out such menial sentences. Things must improve for the victims whereby it is seen that Justice is being dealt out.

Looks like she has achieved her wish , God it makes me sick.
KIDNAP mother Karen Matthews will be given a ?1million new life when she is released from jail in three years? time.
Extraordinary measures are being taken to ensure she is not attacked by vigilantes sworn on revenge for the way Matthews staged her 10-year-old daughter Shannon?s fake abduction.
Police believe that it would be impossible for her to resume her life on release because her fellow inmates would tip off the media.
Instead, plans have been drawn up to take her abroad for up to three months.
She would be trained to use a new name while being given advice on how to change her appearance.
She would then be taken secretly back to Britain to a new home, paid for by the taxpayer and within a 100-mile radius of her former house in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire
Matthews, who allowed Shannon to be ?kidnapped? for 24 days by oddball Mick Donovan to extract a ?50,000 newspaper reward, is even now being involved in discussions about her future.
Police accept there is no chance of her returning to Dewsbury Moor but it is accepted that she would like to remain within a two-hour drive of the area because she knows many people still prepared to support her.
It is understood that during her time in prison, Matthews will be kept away from other prisoners to save her from attack.

Its our fault
we have paid her to breed and stay at home
now she will never have to work again.........nobody will employ her.
On top of that we will have to bring up her other children too,and keep her in prison, lets hope they will educate her in there, and with a little bit of luck she might get a job when she comes out.........dont hold your breath !

Why is so much Money paid out to protect The Criminals ??
What a terrible waste of time and cash. There is only one penalty. Exterminate, not try to re-educate, those type of people are beyond that.

When should the 'rights' of children be recognised
Not of course when it has been agreed to give two children into the 'safe keeping' of two 'gay' men' -- the childrens grand parents(who wanted them) have been 'threatened' that if they pursue the case (after 2 years past) they would forfeit their 'rights' to ever see the children again!!
You would be correct, if you thought that it's 'Social services' again. Wonder just what knowledge, these people do have
must be The younger generation, with the acceptable idea's of gay's and lesbians. At least Senior's do know better!!

That is awful Phoenix to threaten the grandparents like that, I didn't know grandparents have rights, perhaps they can give them a normal life when they visit, if they're still allowed.

I do believe it states in the Bible that man should not lay in a bed as he would with a woman, I also believe that until very recently SODOMY was illegal.
Now far be it for me to have a brain of a normal human being, but I have never known two men being capable of having children naturally, lets face it we just aint clever enough for one, and secondly we just aint built for the job!
Now we read that two of these shirtlifters are going to be given custody of a minor, it makes my blood boil, its not natural, if they can't produce them they shouldnt have them.
I dont care what the PC brigade say, my two children will be brought up with the same values my parents brought me up with, and when the question of these people raises its ugly head they will be told exactly what I was told.

does seem like anything goes now adays,id find it very distressing if my grandchildren were given over to anyone other than close family members .
when my children were growing up ,there was always that worry what if.... i asked my sister if she would take care of mine and i would hers,if the worst ever happened .
i suppose parents ought to think about these things when they have children nowdays ,and put it in their wills to who should bring the children up. as the state sometimes jump in without thinking

Val, As I now understand, Grandparents do have rights, to their grandchildren, but I don't know just what this entails.
Tina, You are correct. Today, anything goes and it can well be Distressing for some.. Can we start withdeleting gays and lesbians and the p.c. brigade
