What a question, Normy - I suppose we all were poor at that time.

Teri, don't you think it is interesting to compare relative degrees of poverty? Today we don't generally realise how lucky we are. Some childhood memories are, never going on holiday, wearing "daps" (plimsolls) in the snow at times, wearing my mother's old shoes, one change of clothing, filling up on bread and jam or dripping or lard, being removed from my Grammar School to go out to work, and hardly anything special for Christmas. But we were never really hungry,I only ever slept two in a bed (not four!),and we always had a "roof over our head".
I know there are exceptions, but now it is expected that you have your own bedroom, a TV and other electronic stuff, more than enough food etc.etc. How was your childhood? I find it interesting anyway.

Normy - if I look back and compare with the childhood my children had - it was a poor one. I was born during war, my first years of life I spent in cellars, as the Russians were bombimg Budapest. Then we were thrown out of Hungary with only our clothes on our body (I inserted a photo of the wagon we were transported in to Germany), then we came to Germany, where we weren't welcome at all - as the Germans themselves didn't have enough to eat and had to share with us - so for some years hunger was a normal condition. My first sweets I got from the Americans, who had pity with us "hungry" children. My family who suffered very much from the loss of all their belongings, wanted to have a "home" as soon as possible, so every penny was saved. However, I must admit, no penny was saved to give me a good education and that's something I'm grateful to my family.

Thanks for sharing your experience Teri,it is good social history how ordinary people suffered because of incompetent or evil politicians. It must have been very traumatic for you. We also asked Americans for chewing gum or sweets, "got any gum chum?" was the phrase here, but we weren't hungry like you, and we had a settled home. I remember "the Yanks" having lots of Lucky Strike and Camel cigarettes, which were very attractive to our smokers.

I like to hear these stories too !
Our children grew up with full bellies
I think it has done them no good at all.
Yet I would not want them to have grown up empty bellied either.
As for shoes Normy ,well,I dont remember having anew pair at all they were always someone elses first.
Yeh I too had plimsols, but I tell you there is nothing wrong with my feet lol so who needs `clarks`
But we did have a radio and Dan Dare lol, thus, all the songs we all know on here lol
How many siblings did you have Normy

War stories are all quite interesting. The crux of the matter being, Homes,Complete Towns and Cities were Destroyed, By deliberation and by those, that started the war. Yes, civilians were killed, so what
they really are The casualties of War. Millions of people from all over the world, suffered in this respect, that their homes was destroyed and lost everything but their lives. Such is the way and it still goes on. Progress
No!! Perhaps it is natures way, of reducing the surplus population
?

Two elder brothers and two younger sisters, mac. I slept in a single bed with my 16 month younger sister for several years. ( Don't even think it, I was much younger than 13!)
It's strange how you can remember vivid images from 60 years ago. In my mind's eye, I can kick a ball against our wall and others, annoying the residents, which I did for hours then. I can see all the rooms, and the garden. However, I am hard pressed to recollect the interiors of the six houses I have lived in since.
I was close to my sister, we walked to the country together, and did bad things. Like picking bluebells and primroses in the woods, tying them to a branch we wrenched from a tree, and trying to sell them door to door. Like carol singing for money (for us).
Suddenly, sister grew up,we were separated, and I was promoted to a double bed with one of my my brothers. He had the habit of often drinking many pints of beer, and falling in to bed in the early hours, smelling like a brewery.
Never did me any harm did it? ( Don't answer that!)

Life was much simpler then we and didn't have much, the things we longed for were a lot cheaper than the the things kids today want.Like a fourtyfive record which I think cost 6 shilling and threepence in the early sixties.
I read the other day that most people didn't experience the free love and drugs that are associated with the sixties and feel that they have missed out, but I was happy with my life without them and dont feel that I missed any thing.

i remember my brother got thrown out of town for fighting and he hitched a lift to London, then he went to hyde park where all the Hippies were and he said they sat around in a circle smoking pot.He didnt mention any Free love Pauline so he must have missed out on that bit. After a week away he came back home .

I didnt think anything at all Norman lol
how can I with four in our bed !I too can remember long ago and not yesterday ! lol
I loved the 60s I was married mind from `65,but I remember everyone being so much happier and laid back,I never took any kind of drugs at all but I did smoke then.(not weed) lol
All the clothes of that era are back in fashion again, what a shame I am too old to wear them.
I have had a nostalgic afternoon today
my two youngest g/children came and my two eldest,we watched a video of my sisters wedding,(17 years ago)with myself and my hubby on it,my two younger ones have never seen their grandad,so when I asked them who it was they said their fathers name and looked quite shocked when I said no !
The two eldest were sat there and said do you remember when he took us to the supermarket and we ate the corners off the bread............yes I do i said lol
lovely afternoon hope you all had the same.

Must be nice to have grandchildren, mac, my son is 28 now and a girl is living with him so who knows! I have always wondered what my grandfathers and grandmothers looked like, I vaguely remember one grannie but she died when I was six, and strangely there are no photos on my father's side.

Its sad isnt it,thankfully I have the wedding on a disc now.
Yes Normy its lovely having g/children I love it but some dont,I know people who wont have their g/children stay or visit,I wasnt brought up like that we were all very close,in fact my g/mother is on the photo I put on here a while ago when you asked me which one was me,she is on the end in white peep toed shoes lol.She always `whitened` them every night ! and she had a size 3 foot.
I am sorry for the ones who lost their g/parents young,I feel i contributed to the upbringing and education of mine and its very rewarding.
Next friday night I am out to my/grandsons 21st arent I lucky.
Funny we dont have any photos of my fathers parents either, but I do remember his mother, she took snuff lol when i asked what she was doing she said `it clears my head` lol
she used to have those stuffed birds in cages that much have cost a fortune, they fascinated me as a child. Now I think its very sad.
sorry I am waffling again lol
