Hi Teri - Thanks for the welcome - wonder where abouts in Germany you are located.  I have a very good friend who lives in Leverkusen - I've been in contact with him since around 1945. He's retired now but spent all of his working life with Bayer.   This seems like a good forum - due to my varied interests with radio controlled stuff, metal detecting and also country and western, I'm a member of nineteen forums, however the other ones tend to just chat about that particular forum (hobby) interest. - this one seems to be more general but there again I suppose we are all of a similar age group (give or take 2o years or so LOL)
Nice to meet you all.

Cheers,

Ian

I'm living in Southern Germany near Stuttgart - many years ago when I was still young I visited with my collegues the Fair in Cologne and we slept in a hotel in Leverkusen. Must say the air there is not really healthy with Bayer in the neighbourhood. I was happy when I was home again - the air in our region is much better. But perhaps one gets accustomed to it.

Phoenix you forgot the industry, above all the chemical industry.

Hi Teri,  No!!  I did not forget the Industry!! There is so little of it left. -- Around here, we used to have Lots of Brickyards,Factories and Sugarbeet in the season ??
Now, one would have to go a distance to see 'Smoking Chimneys' -- All we seem to have is Cars, Cars and yet more cars -- That is about It!! -Gotta Keep It Clean??

How lucky you are, Phoenix, no industry around you that pollutes the air, only tourists that enjoy the fresh air. It's true in our region there's also a so-called "dying of industry", but times changed with the arrival of the computer and we have to look for new ideas.

Hi Teri,  Industry!! Well I believe the motor car, is the new industry!! -- I recall many years ago in a 'Readers Digest' magazine that in Japan, Children going to school had to use 'smog masks' because of the car fumes from the exhausts. At least with today and the Tech: this is greatly reduced:

Phoenix, you are right, cars are enormously polluting the air, although the industry disposes of the technology to reduce this or even to build electric cars or cars driven by gas or biogas that wouldn't cause any pollution, but consumers are not enough interested in such a technology - naturally the price of such a car would be much higher and what do we all want - we want a cheap car offering every possible comfort.

Hi Teri, yes!! we all like to be independant, and the only way is having a car. -- There are some 'Electric' cars about, so it is said??  But the cost must be High??  Do see some advertised to 'run' on low pressure gas' which is cheap to buy.  -- I suppose it will be in the far distant future, when an easier way will be found that does not 'upset' the Oil People ??

My mate Paddy said that, years ago somebody found a way of running a car on water, but this was quickly quashed (paid off)and it has never been heard of since !he was a machanic too, so he should know if it is possible he says it is !

I am almost sure there is an alternative fuel on which to run cars, but it wont be used until the oil supply runs out.If as Paddy says it could be water, our beloved mps will soon slap some tax on it.

I suppose that whatever Fuel comes out in the Future. This government will again take more than their share of Tax!!

As far as I know in Germany they are making researches with methane driven cars and there exist already cars driven by electricity and gas and bio-gas (rape is used for producing this gas).
Somewhere in Southern Germany there's also a village where the houses are heated by bio-gas.
In our town the rubbish is burnt and the heat is used for heating our local hospital.

Ah!! Methane! Good idea, as we still have lots of Cows around, wonderful -- Byproduct?? -- we do have 'Electric cars' but not heard much about them?? -- What a Brilliant idea to actually Burn Rubbish, to produce Heat for Buildings etc. -- The Council Tips here must surely be 'overfull' and what a Saving??

Saving phoenix...........the council havent a clue !
more like spend spend spend !!!!
I truely believe they have far too much money,if you think about the rates they charge alone and even after the councillors perks they are left with millions if not billions and they arent accountable, yes they give us the low down once a year but we cannot check it out in laymans terms.Like how much comes in and how much is paid out and to whom.

Hello Mac, I just have to agree with that!!
Wonder how the council feel, about 'jiggling' around with othere people's hard earned money --- then simply wasting it?? -- With no real Benifit TO The People  ::) ::)
I would be totally ashamed, to let down theose that 'Voted' me to The council|!!
