Title: Weather
Post by: william on January 17, 2008, 10:42:45 AM
I have started this topic to keep the forum going, because if we have nothing else to talk about, the English can always talk about the weather.
To day is downright miserable, dark and rainy.

Post by: ansu on January 17, 2008, 12:13:32 PM
Yesterday I read in our local paper - it's astonishing how much time English can spend on speaking about the weather. By the way, we have bright sunshine and temperatures like in spring in our region! Snowbells are starting to bloom already!

Going out this afternoon, the air smell really fresh, as though spring was just around the corner.
Cherry Tree's are early in your area Mac. Those just down the road, don't seem to be quite ready to wake up yet.

Had I known it was going to be like that I would have gone, but had it been icy and slippy, I would have been too much of a burden to them.

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Phoenix on January 29, 2008, 08:18:12 PM
Hi William, That really is strange!! Although we have not been on Holiday, the last two years. -- We did actually get in a habit of leaving one day earlier?? -- Perhaps it is something to do with Home security?? As we all get older?? -- We have talked about a holiday, this year?? Yet! are somewhat reluctant to book ???

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on January 29, 2008, 09:55:07 PM
Going on holidays is a fine thing, but to be honest, usually I'm always glad to be back home in my own bed again and I think that's like it should be, or as you say "home, sweet home".
William, I have only been once on a holiday for three weeks on the seaside and I must say, for me it was a bit a long time - breakfast - going to the beach - lunch - going to the beach - supper - having some entertainment - I prefer sightseeing tours, at least for one week.

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: william on January 31, 2008, 09:57:07 AM
Any body for tennis, what a day, windy and pouring with rain and i m going out for lunch, think i will cancel the picnic.
I agree with you Terri 12 days on holiday is enough for me, them im ready for home.

Jeez!! Morning already, better get to bed?? --- two hours Later???   Up Again!!  Just to check The home is 'Secure' ---- of course ?????????

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on February 05, 2008, 10:18:06 AM
Phoenix I didn't know you are so afraid and the UK is such a dangerous country. I have very "watchful" neighbours - I suppose you call it - so even if I'm coming back home late in the evening or should I say early in the morning they can exactly say when I came back home and what I wore.
However, these last days it was also very cold and windy in Germany - and this during the carnival ......

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: mac on February 05, 2008, 05:30:49 PM
I think Phoenix jokes Teri lol he means he gets up for the loo pretending he is cheching the house, its just our sense of humour.
What a shame about the carnival.......is it not a bit early for a carnival ?

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on February 05, 2008, 10:10:21 PM
Mac you are right, I still have some problems with your sense of humour.
As to carnival, tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and the time of fasting starts - 40 days, as far as I know. Our carnival fools have been very sad, because the carnival time was rather short this year.
Don't you have on TV our carnival processions?

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: mac on February 06, 2008, 06:29:51 PM
Sadly Teri we dont have your carnival on our TV
We used to have pancake races once but that all stopped.
In fact you would`nt know it was lent !!!

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on February 06, 2008, 08:20:54 PM
So the European Union is still far away. Usually our news show pictures of all kinds of processions all over the world. Perhaps Germans are a bit nosier than Brits.

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Phoenix on February 06, 2008, 09:56:16 PM
Am very pleased that my sence of 'humour' does show in my posts ---- sometimes?? -- If I don't have a late night drink?? I don't get up during the night?? --- So no early 'cuppas' reading, or a ciggy - Which I do on occassions, including a 'security' check?? -----
Don't say 'nosier' -- say, Have an Enquiring Mind, like Mine?? -- Gathering Knowledge!!

Title: Re: Weather

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Phoenix on February 06, 2008, 10:15:45 PM
Teri,  Not about Whom?? (people)  but about all things that we learn from othere's -- i.e. Their country!! Their way of life!! also their interests. Hopefully it gives us a much better understanding of othere's in conversation, or even in these post's!!

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on February 07, 2008, 08:27:01 PM
Phoenix that's interesting getting up at night and gathering information about all things we learn from others.
I sleep at night and have a sweet or not so sweet dream.

Mac, we also had a wonderful sunny day, but I had n time to enjoy it, had to remove the wall papers in my mother's house.

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Phoenix on February 08, 2008, 06:40:30 PM
Teri,  Getting up at night, is nothing to do with other people. It's just -- little old me?? -- Not into 'gathering information' of othere's (BIG BROTHER) just trying to recall another person's interests when having a conversation. -- Everybody is Learning!!

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on February 08, 2008, 08:38:30 PM
That's true. My mother is also getting up in the night and she is looking out of the window and telling me the next morning wo came home at which time and that makes me a bit angry - sorry. The same with one of my neighbours.

Post by: Phoenix on February 10, 2008, 08:42:24 PM
Hi Teri, When one looks out of their Windows during the night, it does not alway's mean they are being 'Nosy'-- around our area, we have what is called - 'Neighbourhood Watch schemes' -- That is keeping our Eye's open against any criminal acts!! --These housing estates are built in Square's (3 sides) and we do get our share of stolen cars and house 'breakins'?? -- We Had One a couple of years ago, from our main shed. Many things was taken!!  Since then, I am more 'Watchfull' -------

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on February 11, 2008, 07:53:14 PM
I thought magnolias have a better life in the UK than in Germany - there's seldom a year where we don't have a frost when they are in bloom.

Magnolias bursting Open ???    WOW!!  Ours look as though they need 'Resussitation?? -- Or 'Singing' Too ???

Teri,, Today's Mail!!  The Police want people to watchout in their streets and Roads, for anything 'Suspicious' ?? Keep an Eye on one's Neighbours Too??  I really could not believe it?? Even some CCTV Cameras, have Microphones in them??   BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING US ALL!! -- Soon to be Installed into Televisions !!   Has already been tried!!

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on February 16, 2008, 03:00:28 PM
Phoenix is this a TV series?
As to the question of water - maybe one day there will also be a shortage of water in our region, but up to now we didn't have any. Naturally in summer (like the last summers) when it's very hot we are also asked to save water and not to wash our car, if it's not absolutely necessary.

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Phoenix on February 17, 2008, 12:14:31 AM
Hi Teri,  No TV series. Just my type of Humour??

The 'Sandwichboard Man' used to walk the streets with Boards over his shoulders-- Which said??

"THE END OF THE WORLD IS NIGH"

A Prophet of Doom!! -- Picking up from Williams words!!
Hands, Knees and Booms a daisy, was just a Party Game:
All related to everything still going UP in Price and The Pension, going Down in purchasing power, come April??

Hello Teri,  You are doing well, I am sure it cannot be easy. -- Every country has it's Culture and way of Life!!  Humour, Is no different to that. --  The 'Blessing' of Forums, as I find, Is that one can 'express' oneself, within the context of princibles, Idea's and beliefs, as well as 'one's type of humour?? -- We all have different Idea's of what Life Is about and one Is not always right in othere people's eye's ?? -- Just look at all 'our' different opinions on this Forum? -- If We all agreed on the same things?? Would It be so intereting?? ---
The Real Benifit Is, we are learning from each other??

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on February 20, 2008, 09:45:47 PM
That's true - I'm learning a lot from you and about the English way of life, that's in some parts quite different from ours and in others the same.

Title: Re: Weather

Mac, You are very welcome, with regards to your photo:
Well Done!! for actually placing in the forum.

Teri, Does 'sunbathing' there mean, in the nude??  Some do that here. -- note: Some people from Southern germany, took part in the Whittlesey 'Straw Bear festival' a short while ago (saw it on countryfile today) -That is just 8 miles from here:

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on February 24, 2008, 08:32:42 PM
Mac sunbathing means take a chair or a deckchair and sit in the sun to tan. I always take a chair and sit on my terrace and enjoy the sun - even in winter, when it's not too cold.

Phoenix, we have some people preferring nude bathing - above all in Northern and Eastern Germany - but in our region it's not so popular - we wear a swimming suit when we go swimming.

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: mac on February 25, 2008, 03:33:40 PM
Teri you made me laugh
I thought a sun bath was something you did in the sun,we too call it sunbathing when we sit out.

Weather sure is deceaving at present. A little warmth in the Sun, but that Wind, Brrrr!! -- Roll on summer, so we can dress normally. --- Summer Photo's not required as there will be so many women about in a state of undress.
I just hope we do get some nice 'SUN' then we can have our Sun loungers, out in our garden??  Complete with Cups of Tea, Biscuits, a Book and of course 'ciggies' = Total Bliss!! ---------------------I Hope  ::) ::) ::)

In our country we also have earthquakes, about 100 km away from where I live, but only very minor ones. However, someone wrote in the paper some weeks ago that it may be that there will be a bigger earthquake sometime in the future.
Must be a terrible shock!

Title: Re: Weather

Phoenix, you are right - in Germany we say first the work and then the entertainment, but we are now retired, so the work can also be done tomorrow -  another German saying "tomorrow, tomorrow and not today, say all lazy people".
Fortunately the weather improved and I hope one day spring will finally arrive and with it a warmer weather.

Mac, Best of luck, if you can manage to reduce the Gas and Electric Bills. Better The cash in your pocket, than the service companies?? -- Am still not sure about this'Global Warming' some of our friends are doubtful ::) ::)

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on April 13, 2008, 12:04:00 PM
With the rain I wouldn't have any problesm, but with the wine - this would be difficult - I only own two vines, i.e. just enough grapes for a dessert every day or if it's a good year for making some pots of jelly.

How long does it have to be below freezing before we get extra heating allowance ?
Do we still get it ?

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: william on November 02, 2008, 09:35:32 AM
dont know Mac, never had it. i would think it would have to remain freezing all day.

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: ansu on November 02, 2008, 10:42:06 AM
Lucky you, Mac - extra heating allowance for senior citizens - unknown in Germany!

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Phoenix on November 09, 2008, 12:05:03 AM
Lucky to receive heating allowance ?? T'is only what we have paid into. £250 this year, as a one off!! which hopefully will allow us to maybe run as 'normal' ??
But we keep turning the 'stat' down, just to keep the Cost Down. Gas and Electric are expencive with no lowering of the cost to Customers ----- Yet ???

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: mac on November 09, 2008, 02:00:00 PM
I found out about the extra heating allowance
it has to be for three consecutive days
and has to remain below freezing
we then get £10 off for the 3 days.
If we still owned our own gas and not sold it off we would be a lot better off.
I think we get this Teri because our pensions are so small and our taxes are high compared to the rest of the EU.
I dont just mean tax on pensions we are taxed on everything here.
See you all friday
