Hello William,  If only we knew the answer to that one ??
I just accept that every April 6th. Our Pension goes Down!! That is of course 'The Purchasing Power' -- Because ALL the main Bills have gone up, we have less to spend. Did I forget to say ------ Save ?? -- I Wish!!

Don't forget that 2p.is per Litre = 9p.per gallon. Buy 4 gallons and get a free newspaper ??  Ah! Yes! Freebee's Just got 90 days free Breakdown cover with the RAC. via Martin's Money Tips!!

Hi Teri
glad to see you back
that was a long time ago when we had good politicians.
Even then you had the support of your work mates
and in some cases unions
now it all me,myself,and I

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on January 03, 2008, 09:45:19 PM
Mac that's really interesting. We still have trade unions you call them I suppose and our workers strike, if they aren't satisfied with their salaries. Our railway engine drivers striked last year and as they haven't yet found a compromise we expect that they will be striking again in January.
You see, I'm a bit astonished about your country.

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: william on January 04, 2008, 09:54:30 AM
We still have trade unions here but they are not as strong as they used to be. In the 70s-80s they were virually running the country, then came along M Thatcher.
We still have strikes but are usually settled by negotiation.

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on January 04, 2008, 09:57:03 AM
Sometimes strikes are also averted by negotiations here, but sometimes - like with our railway engine drivers - the differences between the ideas of the two parties are too big.

Title: Re: inflation

There arent many strikes here now Teri
everyone knows if you dont do it the migrants will and for less !

Title: Re: inflation

William, Let's have a strike ??  Old Age Pensioner's that is ??-- Yes!! You are right. just who would support us?? = Nobody!! -- I cannot understand just why there is strikes!! Cannopt the two Parties, sit down and 'Discuss' the requirements, before a possible withdrawal of labour??
I know only too well --- Greed by the Companies!! Fair Play, no longer excists!! Let our Police strike!! Then 'they' can put the illegals, in uniform?? -- Just like 'they' have done with their Security Staff ?? -- What A Laugh?? Gotta see the Funny side -- or one would have a Heart Attack ?? -- Still many Coach loads a'coming in!!!!

same with cars

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on January 06, 2008, 03:12:19 PM
Although being a foreigner, I think I just should join your discussion.
Phoenix civil servant, i.e.the police, are not allowed to strike - I worked in the administration and I had to sign a declaration stating that I would respect the rules applicable to civil serants.
The Poles, for instance, earn much less money than a German or a British and if there's still money left to send home, they must use up very little money, i.e. they live generally very modest. The only thing I don't like about them is that they partly take away jobs and if you travel in their country, you must be very careful, because they often don't respect the property of others. A friend of mine went to Poland some years ago with a new Mercedes. They parked it and visited a church and when they came back, the Mercedes had gone ......

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on January 06, 2008, 03:14:10 PM
oh and I have forgotten one thing - when I was in Magdeburg someone said since German laws are more severe and in some sectors a minimum wage has to be paid to everyone, they prefer the UK to Germany.

Title: Re: inflation

Maybe us 'Senior Citizens' should all give a 'slow' hand clap??

Teri, You are a European!! - Correct about the Police strike. By law, they are not allowed too?? - In saying that, there are soo many law breaker's here. Just Cannot put everybody in Jail??

Everybody!!  really is WELCOME in this country!! Why do they travel so many thousands of miles, by any means possible, to get here??

Title: Re: inflation

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on January 06, 2008, 06:31:36 PM
Even if their wages in the UK are lower than those of normal British workers they are still much higher than in Poland.
It's the same with our immigrants. The costs of living in their mother countries are by far lower than ours, so with the money they send home their family can lead a decent life.

Title: Re: inflation

Hi William, All Too Well!! That really is The Biggest problem, that has happened to this country for Decades!!
Other countries, I am aware, do have 'similar' problems??  of which, they will have to solve!!
Cost of Living, is Why, We all shop at 'Supermarkets ????

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: william on January 08, 2008, 03:13:40 PM
I shop at the supermarkets because we dont have any local grocery stores any more. For all otherthings I use the local shops ie papers sweets hardware smellies.

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: Phoenix on January 08, 2008, 04:15:25 PM
Hi William, Much the same for us. What 'smellies do you use.  I still prefer 'Old Spice' have tried many othere's but not very keen.  Have you tried 'Hugo Boss' which is rather 'pricey' - Too much for me!!

Title: Re: inflation

You know Hugo Boss is a German and also making wonderful clothes especially for men, but it's true his products are not really cheap.

Title: Re: inflation

Though not aware that Hugo boss is German. I am aware that most things of German origin, are Quality Products. I have a pair of Trousers, made in Germany which do not crease much either. Unfortunately, we do not have a German Car now, but may well change --- Sometime, as I prefer larger cars:

Am Compelled to accept that!! The exception being that OUR Pensions are The Lowest in Europe with The purchasing Power, Dropping every April!! --- GAS/ELECTRIC now going for an 'Alltime High'!! Petrol and Food trying to follow suit¬¬

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on January 12, 2008, 06:39:20 PM
I can't judge, but some years ago I read somewhere that you get a basic pension, whereas in Germany the amount of the pension is dependent on the money you paid into the system as long as you worked.
However, in Germany there are also a lot of senior citizens that only have a small amount available every month, for instance if you have been without work for a very long period and only earned a small wage and your wife didn't work because of the children.

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: mac on January 12, 2008, 11:46:49 PM
it is the same here Teri
everyone gets a basic pension
this is earnings related now
so some get more than others depending on what you paid in.
The problem lies with the cut off line for benefits.
The ones getting only the state pension get it topped up and get rate rebates and rent paid for them etc.
The ones who paid into a private pension scheme might only be a couple of quid better off than those who didnt pay it in,but they get no benefits, therefore, have it all to pay
including tax.
This is why some people think the system is so unfair, pay it in and you get penalised, dont pay it in and you get the benefits !
A lot of the pensioners now think they were wrong to pay into any kind of pension scheme, and to buy their own home.
example: some friends didnt pay into a private pension they live in a rented house they get the state pension and rent paid and rates paid and all the handouts that are offered, some paid into it and had their own houses and they are penalised by not getting the free handouts, and they may only be a few pounds short of getting it.Therefore all they worked for is taken from them either in tax or they get no benefits.

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on January 13, 2008, 09:49:45 AM
What you write is true, it's the same in Germany. However, I think every person has still left a "pride". As I told formerly I worked in the administration and it's not so easy to go begging for money. There are people who don't mind doing it, but for me it would be an awful thought. So, in my opinion it depends on your personality, i.e. I'm very proud that I always was able to earn my living by myself and that even now that I'm old I don't need any supporting aid from someone.

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: mac on January 13, 2008, 01:22:25 PM
I too am proud Teri, but there will come a day when my income is less than my outgoings, this is a certainty.

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on January 13, 2008, 05:19:52 PM
What about adapting your outgoings to you income? When I divorced I only had little money on hand and at first I was very frustrated, but then I realized that such a lot of things aren't absolutely necessary and my outgoings matched once again my income.

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: mac on January 13, 2008, 10:24:25 PM
Been doing that for years Teri !!!
only so much you can cut back on
my rates have more than trebled since my hubby passed
and the water too, gas and electric etc etc
but my pension has risen by 75p
I use my own money not pensions for the likes of hols
and when its gone its gone .....sobeit

Can I ask do you have to get a licence to view the television ?

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on January 14, 2008, 10:29:11 AM
There's a basic fee you have to pay when you want to watch TV, then you have the choice of either using a satellite dish (installation rather expensive I realised) or cable television for which you have to pay an additional monthly fee.  Then there's, of course, also Pay TV.
For years I have had cable TV, then one day my son-in-law had a satellite dish that he did no longer require, however, the costs for installing it very so high that I could have easily watched cable TV for more than 10 years.

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: Phoenix on January 14, 2008, 02:16:14 PM
One of the problems with us 'oldies' is that we have too much Pride. It is how we was brought up!! - Not to Ask, for anything!! -- It is all very well the government staing that Pensioner's are Not Claiming, what is rightfully their's??  --  Just try and Apply?? You may well do as Eve did, --Told them to 'stuff it ' !!!!
We manage and that is it. Should the government make life worse??  The Car will have to GO!!--Not Complaining!!
 There are many far worse!!

No, Mac, it's just for saving costs and to be honest the stories often ressemble each other. Last year we had a lot of series and movies on TV dealing in Africa - when you had sawn one, you didn't need to see the others - the setting and story were, except for some insignificant changes, the same.

Hi Will
this is the new digital tv that is being brought out,we get ours in march.Try checking with the manufacturer to see how you can do it,I only know because on the Titchmarsh show it said digital viewers can turn off the background music by pressing a certain colour button.,I did and it worked !! but I havent seen it since.I think maybe they are getting ready for the big switch over.

Title: Re: inflation

Mac, Shame we missed that show. Am aware that colour Buttons do come on the screen, but we do not use them??
Whatever they are supposed to do ??
How we would so love to eliminate that confounded, so called background music. - There are times when one is 'listening to the music' than The Talking!!
Should You find out Just which Button does that, please let us all know.

Make lots of soups wiht the vegetables you can even buy bones to put in the soup to flavour !

I have for many years used butter but in moderation, and thats because a heart specialist friend of mine told me what causes heart desease, its the globules that form when the margarine in being made, our bodies cannot dispose of it
Suits me,you cant beat a bit of best butter !

Some days ago I read in our papers it's much better to use butter than margarine and one should not always only use olive oil, but change the type of oil, too, from time to time.

Title: Re: inflation

Extra Virgin now I use !

Don't 'they' enjoy confusing us??  6 say it's Good!! and 6 say it's Bad ???? Phew!! can bring one out in a sweat??
But!!  A little of what one fancies, has to be very nice ??

Don't know what 'oil' my Eve uses??? --- But I doubt if there are any 'Virgins' still around?????

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on February 05, 2008, 10:26:51 AM
The extra virgin olive oil is really very good, but expensive. I have never been in a supermarket in the UK, but here in Germany they sell all kinds of oils nut oil, sesame oil, linseed oil, rape oil, oil made of pips of grapes etc. etc. - one gets really confused and as per the newest German researches you should take one time this oil, then the other - or is it only to ensure that everybody makes a good business - I don't know!

Title: Re: inflation

You have a good point there Teri
I think we have too much choice in everything

Title: Re: inflation

Probably not, but shopkeepers sell what people buy - if they don't find any customers for certain things, they are quickly removed from the shelves and replaced by new ones.

chatting to farmers last Sat. they told me that last year, wheat was £60 a ton, this year it is £180 a ton, hence the big rise in the shops oh dairy products.
Athough weat has risen 3 fold they are still getting t6he same price for their meat.We all know what that means, it will allow our beloved goernment to import more cheap meat.

or you will have to pay a higher price for you British meat. It's true farmers don't get their share in profits. In Germany, too.

The Farmer's sure do not have an easy time. Some have been wiped out when Foot and mouth Struck. Othere's are having a hard time making a profit, as some cash, has to be 'ploughed' back into their business:

Farmers never got rich from their work - in Germany they offer family holidays on a farm to earn a bit of extra money.Children like this kind of holidays - above all all those children growing up in a big city have never seen any farm animals and they don't know where milk comes from.

That used to happen here. Families went 'Hop Picking' in Kent, as an example. We called it " Busmans Holiday" -- Don't think it happens any more ??

Until recently farmers in England were always considered to be well off, we have a saying here "you never saw a farmer riding a bicycle". Having said that, they had to work hard.

You can check the internet to possibly find the truth. As far as I know a lot of money is payed as subvention to European farmers and Tony Blair was very strict regarding the sharing out of subventions partly to the detriment of the Germans.

Teri, Tony Blair isa man we would like to forget here, he just about ruined this country.                           Tt

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on March 25, 2008, 09:03:44 PM
Maybe you are right William - I can't judge it. You know when our chancellor Schroeder introduced the so-called Agenda 2010 everybody said he will ruin us. However, one is sure the so-called "fat" years belong to the past and we all have to give our share. Germans got poor after the introduction of the Euro, but it's not only Germans, but all other European countries, too. Prices have not been halved, but doubled, i.e. what we paid in DM we now pay in Euro. Who is profiting from this - I don't know, but I know  who is suffering - all Germans.

Title: Re: inflation

The Genuine English, are 'suffering' too!! Pensioner's will also find after April 6th. their pensions will not go as far as to 'cover' the extra increases??
The 'othere's will be alright , as 'they' don't pay any Rent or Council Tax. Their income will Increase!!

Title: Re: inflation

The ones on benefits Teri, they have it paid for them thats what I was saying to Michael, you can be just £1 over and you have to pay all the bills.

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on March 26, 2008, 09:46:00 PM
... but who are the ones on benefits - managers, owners of businesses. Naturally they have also "benefits" in Germany, but on the other hand if you own a firm you also have to carry a risk - many firms went bankrupt in the last years in Germany - the reason, I don't know, some said mismanagement, others said the recession and again others said the globalisation. I have been working in a firm for more than 20 years and then it went bankrupt and I was "on the street". Fortunately I found a job in the administration.

Teri if you dont work here you are kept
if you chose to breed here you are kept
if you chose not to pay into a pension scheme you are kept
if you chose none of the above you are penalised
and now the migrants, all of this too, including family allowance for kids in their own country its £20 a week for each kid ! oh and I bet they dont check on this they will just pay it out.

Teri, The 'othere's' are those that come to this country and find it Full of Milk and Honey!!

Companies go bankrupt, due to mis management!!  Leaving the 'workers' without Jobs, plus other Companies that support them, Don't Get Paid!!

The Bosses of the bankrupt companies, receive High payouts and High pensions!! -- Do you consider this FAIR??
Please note- Mac has posted the rest of the news!!
Thank You Mac!!

Phoenix one of my pupils makes his A level next month and we just deal with the problems in the UK.
In my book they write that after the introduction of the rigorous National Act of 1981 the number of immigrants considerably dropped and that in 1993 for instance only 53,600 people from foreign and Commonwealth nations were accepted for settlement.
As conclusion they say that in Britain there's not only a social gap, but also a colour gap and that race struggle is connectedwith class struggle.
Are they wrong?

Hi Teri, Just where does this Information come from??
Someone needs to come and Live here, for about six moths and circulate, Talking to people over a wide area and politely receive 'their' feeling and experiance -- Of The Numbers ?? The Social Gap ?? Ask yourself, Does the Intake to our country, really Want, To Integrate ?? No!! otherwise our Laws would be accepted,  In this a Christian  Country !!

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on March 28, 2008, 11:12:47 PM
It's a school book used for the preparation of A level in English.
Moreover our pupils have to read stories dealing with the time of colonialisation and the consequenes of this colonialisation. Do you know by chance the movie "My son the fanatic"? This is one story we have to read.

Title: Re: inflation

yeh I have heard of it and was there a film too ?

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on March 30, 2008, 04:21:18 PM
Topic of the English tests for A level is "Colonial Time" of the UK, i.e. we read a lot of short stories dealing with life of the Brits in their colonies and of the time after Britain lost its colonies, among others stories from Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, Muriel Spark, Doris Lessing, Quisra Sharaz, Salman Rushdie and Hanif Kureishi, as well as of African writers like Narayan, Achebe and wa Thong'O. In the past years we always dealt with American topics, but now a minister found out that Britain is nearer and that we should deal with the problems of this country.
My son the Fanatic is also a movie, but I haven't seen it yet - I only read the story.

In the main, my interests are about war's and how and why they started. Also I have the DVD sets of The 1st. and 2nd. world wars, which I find very interesting. The horror, that soldiers went through, beggars belief and the question Is still Why did they happen??

Title: Re: inflation
Post by: ansu on March 30, 2008, 08:37:37 PM
Phoenix, that's a good question - history showed us that the reason is always a striving for more power or in the 20th/21st century for natural ressources (gas, oil, ore etc.). In former Yugoslavia for instance they said it was a war about religion, but that's only half true - the coastal regions were much richer than the rest of the country. One of my former collegues once said where there are human beings they behave like human beings and I must admit he is right - mankind hasn't changed much during the last centuries.

As for Religion, I have no time for it. Since when did it benifit mankind?? -- I believe in just being a christian!! Don't talk about people and don't do anybody, any harm!!
Basically??  "Live and Let Live" ----

I think everybody is trying to solve problems, but when we have solved one, a new arises. Ah! William, To be sure it is!! but have not played for 2 years now. Never having had 'time' for any sports, I was only 'introduced' to Bowls and Snooker about 6 years ago. With my 'Balance' being a little unsteady on my legs, I don't think there is much more 'playing' to be enjoyed??
The last two weeks of snooker i have lost both times --
NIL to 4 away?? -- If I played Bowls?? I feel that I might fall, so it's worrying me somewhat?? ---  Don't think there is any, Crown Green Bowls played around here. Most Clubs are wanting new members, as they can only play with minimum teams. Ah! Well ! I was hoping  ::) ::) ::)
