Title: Happy Birthday Radio's 1 and 2 Post by: Skeggy on September 30, 2007, 09:58:52 AM Today 40 years ago radio’s 1 and 2 took over from the light programme. Both these channels are celebrating the commencements by running special programmes that were popular back in 1967.
At 10 am they have a ‘Junior Choice’ Special with Ed Stewart and at 1 pm there bringing back ‘Two Way Family Favourites with Michael Aspel and throughout the day they will be remembering September 30 1967. Back then the radio was more special than it is today…There was nothing on day time TV in those days so if you wanted to be entertained there was just the radio. I remember the first radio programme that meant anything to me was on a Saturday morning ‘Children’s Favourites’ with Uncle Mac.. regular songs requested were I know an old lady who swallowed a fly, the runaway train, Sparky the magic piano and the three Billy goats gruff…do you remember them. Would you believe it has I sit here typing they are playing sparky.. Sunday was always the best day for the radio in those days…for me the day started at 9.30 with ‘Easy Beat with Brian Mathews presenting then at 1pm it was 2 way Family Favourites with Cliff Michelmore in London and Jean Metcalfe in Germany. Other shows included The Billy Cotton Band show ‘ Wakey wakey loll , Meet the Hugget’s with Jack Warner and a young Petula Clark, The Al Ready Show and the Jimmy Clitheroe show. At 4pm was a must not miss Pick Of The Pops with Alan Freeman. Happy Days..
