Title: documentarys
Post by: william on September 25, 2007, 09:24:55 PM
One of my favourite tv progammes r documentarys, but I find these days they r completely spoiled by loud musicm even playing while the narrator is talking. I have got to the stage now, if there is music playing I switch off.
What do you think.

Oh! Dear! William, I too enjoyed Documentary's and found them quite 'educational'- But as with so much Today, Music just has to be added ?? and Not just background music either!! -- So, as with you, if music is 'playing'? OFF it goes !! --- I believe it is an 'import' from the usa, as their films are heaverly impregnated>

The Use Of music in documentaries is nothing new.. who can remember 'Victory at Sea' highlighting the battles at sea during WW11, Richard rogers composed a complete suite of music for that. then there was The Valliant Years that followed Wiston Churchill's war years, what great music that was. Music is used to add effects to the pictures we see..like for instance a lion stalking it prey( slow and haunting music) then you get the sound of the chase as the music speeds up.
Can u imagine watching and old silent film without a piano playing in the background, It was often more the skill of the pianist rather than the actual film that would swell the audiences at the old picture houses.

there is quite a difference to silent films and documentarys Skeggy, at least the music wasnt drowning the spoken word. I watced a doc. about galapagos last nite and at times you couldnt hear what was been said for the loud music. I agree it can enhance the prog, but it should be kept as background music.

William and Phoenix... i tend to agree with you the
music playing drowns the spoken word.... ..now days
its even worse on `Sky`, we have to have the volume       at 26/30 at times.....and when the adverts come on,      its to the remote quick !

Hello skeggy.... some of the programmes that i video
are fasinating.... like `how do they do that`.. then
the series........ `what causes an airplane to crash`
not much background music to them.
i follow your progress on another site.... at times.
you fit in there very well.
some other programmmes i tolerate..as a lady friend
watches them.other times i listen to classical music
through earphones........................ and write.

We have been shown how to 'View' any programmes, we have 'Missed' in the last week, to be able to View, Anytime. What a wonderfull Idea, when having missed a programme when viewing another Channel>

I have a few Documentaries on DVD . My Favourites are the two by David Dimbleby ..I have A picture of Britain and am waiting to get How we Built Britain ...when it comes out. another great series was the The British isles a natural History with Alan Titmarsh and of course the fabulous 'Planet Earth'.
Pheonix I think thats the future of telivision ...in a few years time there will be no time schedule for when tv shows are on ...you will be able to watch what you want, when you want.

Who say's there is any 'real thought' behind what people, should see or hear ?? -- Just find The Control, that governs the 'Music' and Turn it off!! Then one can 'listen' to The Conversation taking place ??
Ah!! Problem!! What control ?? -- Happens that nobody has come out with one -- Yet!! -- We have to be 'Patient' ??
Gotta wait for modern technology, to progress!!
Some years ago, the Japanease was able to 'eliminate The 'Adverts' on TV -- Don't know just what happened -- maybe like the first Ladies Nylon Stockings -- Would Not 'Ladder'-- So The Design, was Bought Out!!
Yes! Now that it is possible, at least with 'cable' to watch any programme, as one desires. Other Companies will jump on the 'bandwagon' and futher progress, in that direction. As with all the things one can carry, on one's person, like, Mobile Phones, camera's and such -- One day WE, will become a, --- Personal Communications Centre ??

We don't have cable, is it good? I have to have subtitles on if there's music but of course if you are watching scenery it spoils it.

Hello Val,  We find Cable TV. via 'Virgin' to be very good, at least no problems with bad weather reception.
Hope you are in a Cable Area, to be able to receive.
We often record on DVD, but in saying that, One can view any programme one has Missed in the last week, Anytime!!

Ah! Mac, Well done for finding out how to video record, without the Adverts !! -- Our recording is normally Films, for watching while we have dinner, about 6.00pm. -- True there is not much of interest on TV. so it is either a Book or Computer.
