Title: Re: MEMBERS SAVED ? Post by: smiler on September 24, 2007, 08:02:23 AM Phoenix.
went to the annual " salute to the 1940`s " show on saturday.... even better than last year year. spoke to an A.R.P. warden, there with a open van with all the gear of the time/.stirrup pump etc. i told him of my years of being an civil defence messenger, attached to a wardens post..i put him right about a couple of items of dress. moving on spoke to other people.. had a cup of tea in an enamel cup.. plenty of U.S.`snowdrops` another was....an A.T.S.`redcap`in full uniform. plenty of `yanks`, commamdo`s, navy,+ air force. a great day was had by all on a hot sunny day. even a few generals there, plus... Patten again. Title: Re: MEMBERS SAVED ? Post by: Phoenix on September 24, 2007, 03:41:27 PM Hello Smiler, So glad that you enjoyed The salute to the 1940s!! I trust you was nice and polite to the 'air raid precaution' warden ?? -- and had a go on the 'stirrup pump' ?? -- wow!! memories?? nostagia?? sure brings things back. We went to 'Ramsey, 1940s Weekend' on the 18th. August (sunday) We had a fabulous time, speaking to so many people and the terrific displays being shown. There was also some in German Uniform (not nazi)-- Which according to 'The Best of British' magazine, some people are objecting too.-- Must go to more, hopefully next year ?? Do You buy 'The Best of British' magazine??
I cannot find anyone who I can pass them on too, together with 'Yours' magazines and 'Computer Active' -- seems a shame, so will see if 'Age Concern' is Interested ?? Title: Re: MEMBERS SAVED ? Post by: smiler on September 24, 2007, 03:57:53 PM Hi Phoenix.. yes these 1940 shows certainly
bring out the best in people. did`nt notice any german uniforns......plenty of `jeeps`. an `essex` group of infantry.home guard too. Yours mags...and the other mags, would be acceptable in a hospital book sxchange unit. also a doctors waiting room.... as i said General Patton was there, with his 3/4 other officers + his..... 2 guns round his waist. a paddle steamer to give trips up & down the river too. Title: Re: MEMBERS SAVED ? Post by: Phoenix on September 24, 2007, 04:18:21 PM Hi Smiler, Re- the Mags: Doctors surgery was not interested. Never thought about the Hospital (wvs) will take next time and hope they will help.
Bye the way, Clicked in to The Dover Forum, last week and found quite interesting -- possibly Nostalgia again !! The 1940 re-enactments seem to be getting more and more popular and covering more area's of our country. So very well supported by the public and fully appreciating the organisation that goes into these shows. Title: Re: MEMBERS SAVED ? Post by: smiler on September 25, 2007, 08:54:22 AM our area lends itself to the 1940`s slot very well
because a former dockyard...it has H.M.S.Cavalier, submarine H.M.S. Ocelot, in dry docks there. the `jeeps` were running around all day carrying troops. the wartime `canteen` was vey popular too. police in war garb, naval rating, officers, wrens, of the period too..no russian or italian uniforms there, no doult they will come later. they had `the lindy dancers` there to.. doing the jitter bug. all lively...good clean fun...Phoenix. Title: Re: MEMBERS SAVED ? Post by: Phoenix on September 25, 2007, 12:25:30 PM Gee, what a lovely time you had. The 'lindy' dancers was also at Ramsey, reminded us of the 'Good Olde days' -- The time of our 'Jiving' and dancing.-- I believe these 1940s re-enactments, remind us all of those very hard times and those that gave their lives,-- That 'we' might survive in a better world.-- Here's to seeing many more 1940s re-enactments and remembering those days. In moving from Dover and Deal in 1941, memories do come back.-- have gone into the Dover Forum and past history and found it quite interesting, most is about recent years, so doubt if I would recognise much now. But content with the 'memories'!!
