How much can you tell about a nation by the photos people take of their home country? Above are photos of the UK and Europe, assessed by a psychologist.

A rose, baby chicks, beach huts and an old man's hands. They're just some of 13,000 photographs taken by people as part of a new European project to represent - and celebrate - their home country.

One of the most surprising findings of the project - commissioned by Canon - was the almost total absence of traditional or iconic images, such as flags, national monuments or landmarks. Photographs of nature and the environment dominated the pictures from all countries.


But despite this common ground the photographs still speak volumes about national identities, says psychologist David Lewis, who analysed the images.

"The lack of symbols of state power suggests Europe, at least as presented by these images, may have abandoned many of the nationalistic attitudes which led to two world wars.

"The emphasis on the beauty of nature suggests that an ever increasing number of Europeans yearn for a simpler lifestyle."

It would be a rural scene, showing a county meadow with cows grazing and fields of freshly cut hay bailed up ..and a small cart track with a horse drawn cart heading towards a small village with a church steeple just showing above the trees and   the music accompaning this scene would be 'Jerusalem'. I love the art of Constable, his paintings picture up Britain to me.

I know nothing about art but I do know I love the British countryside and especially Constable country.

headline in a paper this am which i am sure you will raise a glass and say good luck to em.Our beloved MPs are costing the taxpayers £87million pounds a yearin claiming expenses. Averaging out at £200.000 each.I wonder how many of em claim heating allowances on top. We can moan but cant do owt about.

Hello William, Surely it must be alright for the MPs. to 'claim' that amount of expences ?? -- It Is being Allowed, so just who are we, to Complain??
As Senior Citizens, we are not just complaining for the sake of 'Moaning' -- We have seen and experianced, so much 'change' over the decades, that we cannot understand, just how selfish, some people in 'power' can really be!!
What happened to 'Common sence' and 'Decency'-- I dare not say 'Fairness'-- That is Long Gone!!

How dare this lot lecture on honesty and integrity.
Getting the truth out of MPs is like pulling teeth out,bit by bit we are discovering that many are employing their relatives at great expense to tax payers.And all we hear from MPs is that are underpaid to represent us in parliament,It is a sick joke that the people who constantly lecture us about honesty and integrity  are the worst offenders.

We elect em, we should be given the power to sack em. In all my years on this planet have I known of a more dishonest conniving lot of MPs

Weren't there some that have resigned or were replaced by others. In Germany they usually resign and afterwards get every month a certain amount of money.

The 'higher up' those 'naughty' people are (even if they do resign) are well assured of getting another 'position' with equally Higher salary -- That is the way things seem to workout?? -- Not forgetting their Higher Pensions??

What a discussion - when I was at school we learned that the British are a good example for democracy - one time the Conservatives form the government, then the Labour and then again the Cosnservatives etc. etc.
Our teacher told us that this is better than in Germany where often the same party forms the government, chiefly the right wing (CDU).

Times are still, a'changing fast!! Voting ?? If you don't like one -- Put The other back In??  some are rigged::) ::)

Shops distributing "client's cards" can tell you what you buy and how much money you spend on this and that. Interviewers on the phone, banks etc. collect data on you and if we get our "health card" everybody knows how healthy we are, what pills we swallow - so where has "privacy" gone?

Phoenix don't you have an opposition in the UK? With our big coalition in Germany it's a bit unfavourable, but we all hope this will change after the next election.

Hello Teri, we have 3 main parties. Labour - Conservative - and Liberal Democrats?? -- Have been into their policies, on the computer and there is so little difference between them, they could well be a 'Coalition Government' -- There are smaller parties, but for the main event at Elections -- It goes either Labour or Conservative -- Outcome?? Full of False Promises, that are not put into practice!!
 Badly need a Party that is non political -- Just capable of making 'A Job Well Done?? ----- IF??  Possible??
