Title: Free Lunch?
Post by: Val on August 07, 2007, 06:13:55 PM
What do you think are they being scroungers and greedy or is it a sensible option?
No such thing as a free lunch?
Bob and Paul
Freeganism is a lifestyle choice

They eat food they find in bins and are driven by conscience, not financial need. Meet the freegans.

According to the saying there's no such thing as a free lunch, but freegans beg to differ.

They only eat food they can scavenge for free from supermarket dustbins. Most is only just past its sell-by date, some is still within it but the packaging has been damaged.

The freegan philosophy of "ethical eating" is a reaction against a wasteful society and a way of highlighting how supermarkets dump tonnes of food every year that is still edible.

There is far too much food on offer at the supermarkets nowadays,I dont know why they throw it away they could just reduce it.
Good luck to Bob and Paul if its what they want to do,why waste it !
shame on the supermarkets though they should be brought to boot !

This is just one aspect of the drop out community that seems to be popular with some of the population at the moment. I think it often starts with kids dropping out of school. they see that there life is going nowhere and they look at there parents lifetime of work and toil and decide to rebel. the web says that freegan's is two words free and veegan meaning no meat or anything to do with killing animals or animal research . they often don't work and travel around in Caravans calling themselves new age travelers. We get a lot of them in skegness around this time of year, they come here for a free holiday.
They make out that they are friends of the earth but you should see the mess they leave behind. There vehicles are untaxed and un-insured but they police won't do anything about it because they know they will be gone before a case gets to court. they say they have a right to live this way but try telling that to someone who has had them living on there doorstep or someone having to pay for repairs after they have been hit by one of there vehicles.
Can't help wondering though if there was a major catastrophy or a war situation who would be able to cope with the aftermath. lol i'm sounding morbid now , time to shut up .

I wish the supermarkets would distribute to a needy charity, like the homeless. Maybe if the people walking the streets had food in their bellies they could contribute to society more than they do. Personally I think its stealing and if the supermarkets reduced all the edible goods at your own risk and these people actually bought it, then it would reduce the waste.Of course more efficient ordering would also do it. ;)

Trouble with supermarkets is they don't care about the waste they're only target is to be bigger and better than the next supermachain, So its a case of bigger choice for customers, buying in bulk so that they can keep prices low and if that means more waste then so be it.

Tesco is one of the worst, they snap up land around them so that they can stop other competitors moving in on them. We had a new tesco built in Skegness 2 years ago and part of the land they bought contain two semi-detatched houses. they slapped a compulsory perchase order on them and 2 familys moved out. Over 2 years on those houses are still boarded up and I have heard of other towns with the same thing happenning . they have no intention of redeveloping them they just want to keep competition away.

That is disgusting there should be a law against them land grabbing that way. We haven't enough homes as it is without leaving them empty for greed.

Free Lunch
Do you also have in winter a so-called Vesperkirche (church giving lunch free of charge to people in need and homeless people)?
In our town we have such an organization (managed by the church). They will soon open their doors.

Title: Re: Free Lunch?
Post by: Phoenix on December 14, 2007, 05:09:30 PM
Yes!!  Volunteer's are those people that are fully prepared, To put Themselves out, without a thought to their Time and cost -- Totally Selfless!

BLESS THEM ALL, AS WITH THOSE INVOLVED WITH CHARITIES!!

Title: Re: Free Lunch?
Post by: ansu on December 14, 2007, 08:52:31 PM
Volunteering is not only giving - it's also getting. You don't get any money for your work, that's true, but sometimes you get a smile or you have the impression that you helped and that cheers you up.
At least in Germany there are such a lot of lonely old persons and they would be lost, if there weren't any volunteers or organisations organising meetings, gym, excursions etc. for them.

How Important is it to 'Give' someone a Smile????
If 'freely' given, it speaks a thousand words -- and You may receive one in return ?? --------------

There is a Poem, about Smiling?? But I cannot recall It ??
'Something about giving a person a smile, because 'they' might have nothing to give' ???????

Phoenix, what about this one

S M I L E
Smiling is infectious, you catch it like the flu.
When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner, and someone saw my grin -
When he smiled I realized, I'd passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile, then I realized its worth,
A single smile, just like mine, could travel 'round the earth.

So, if you feel a smile begin, don't leave it undetected.
Let's start an epidemic quick and get the world infected.

In Germany young people eat also chicken McNugget and Burgers and I read somewhere it wouldn't be as unhealthy as it is, if they didn't use such a lot of fat. The plus is, they always use fresh ingredients. But the only thing I eat is the salad of MacDonald - it's really good and tastes everywhere in Europe the same.

going back a little further than you Mac, I remember going to the ghippie late on saturday night and having a whale and a ha"penny ( halfpenny) of chips.
Thw whale was the tail end of the fish and you got a good few chips for a halfpenny then. Wrapped in newspaper as well, so you had something to read while you ate em.

Title: Re: Free Lunch?

If I listen to you two I just get nostalgic, but you forget one thing - at that time you earned less money and your working day had much more hours.
Even when I started to work the working day was longer and you had only 2 weeks holidays instead of 6 as at present. To save money I lived with my parents and shared the car with my father, because buying a car would have been much too expensive for me at that time.

Title: Re: Free Lunch?

True Terri, when I started work there were no paid holidays. no sick pay. We then worked a 48 hr week. When we eventually got holidays with pay, it was only half pay.

I am only in a position to speak for myself.-- Not going back to The War Years:    Married in 1953. Started buying our first Home in '54. - Earnt a lot less money, yet studied and passed exams, to begin my future. Everything was Good, untill the end of the '60s. The Start of the downward slide.-- Yes!! I love 'Nostalgia'- I loved those times. For Me, they was the very best.-- Even when on rare occassions, I worked right through the day and the night, to complete a 'work schedual' = Really Happy Day's !!!!

Yes!! that goes without saying. The main point being, there was a future, to look forward too. Production Companies was working at full capacity!!  There was Work for All and No scroungers in sight. There was far more Respect for othere's-- and of course, there was "Disapline"
Living was for the Worker!!

for some that life still goes on
lots of young people are building homes and having families
and when they get old it will be their nostalgia
I think there is always a future to look foward to

Sure, some young people really do try, to make a home and raise a family!!-- Some, take on ready made families! Whether they have a future, is extremely hard to say, but if they stay together?? They may well have a good chance??
Should they succeed and have Job security (long term) not get into debt, work as a team?? Then they may well look back and remember, these times??

Phoenix, what you write isn't correct - at least in as far as Germany is concerned - we still have a lot of machine tool works and we still require more engineers than we have on hand - they repeated it today on TV.

Title: Re: Free Lunch?

Hello Teri, So very pleased that Germany still has their own, Machine Tool Companies!!  I was refering to our country -- Our's are long gone -- But then again I knew that from being in Germany, back in the 60s. at The Machine Tool Exibition  (mesa galand)I believe it was called ?? There was so few British Machines, even then.
Perhaps there is not the traing as there used to be, for the relevant skills ??

I don't know you must ask the managers of your companies.

Title: Re: Free Lunch?

Perhaps they are no longer so big and powerful as they used to be, but there must be some, as British companies are buying German firms - even in our small town.

Title: Re: Free Lunch?

Teri, Sure gives one a suprise. Why would British companies, buyout German companies ??

Title: Re: Free Lunch?
Post by: ansu on January 12, 2008, 06:35:48 PM
Ask them - even the Märklin miniature trains were bought by Kingston (?) - a British firm. So there must still be a lot of money in Britain.

loads of money here teri
its mis-used
the politicians are having a raise AGAIN !!!

Title: Re: Free Lunch?
Post by: ansu on January 13, 2008, 09:57:37 AM
In Germany they say that our economy starts booming again - so there seems to be a misunderstanding, i.e. the money is not distributed evenly.
It's true the US economy has much troubles, but Americans live differently, they just apply for a loan, then for a new to pay it back and so on ...... This can't be healthy from an economical point of view.

Title: Re: Free Lunch?
Post by: Phoenix on January 14, 2008, 01:27:59 PM
There appears to be many problems in America, at the moment and it can get worse, before it gets better. This in turn reflects on other countries. Hopefully it will not bring about, another Depression?? from which it would be hard to recover!!

Title: Re: Free Lunch?
Post by: ansu on January 15, 2008, 09:58:51 AM
On German TV they said, it's dependent on the Chinese (that own the majority of American loans) whether there will be a new depression or not - but how could China profit from it in the end? So, let's hope the best.

This talk of China brings back memories of a young man I met about 6 years ago,via church,he was in UK at univercity studing English. When he got his degree he had to go back to China,no ifs or buts, that was it !!!
I still get the odd email from him he has started up a school but still up against the powers that be.He is married now and is expecting his first and only child very soon.He is the sole breadwinner for his family his mother being a widow, this is normal in China for the son to look after their families,he worries who will do it for him if he has a girl.So we are very lucky here arent we we all get a pension of sorts and we dont need our families to help us out.
info;
China is the worse polluted country
then India........

and Mac did you know that a lot of the biologial grown food sold at least in Germany is coming from Bio farms in China?
As to the old age there seems to exist sort of a pension, but it's rather small they told on German TV. However, the one child regulation starts to take revenge in China - there are not enough young people to earn the money required for this old age pension - as per German TV.

Yorkshire pudding is quite unknown in Germany. My daughter wanted it for Christmas dinner, so I cooked it with much gravy on it, as William had recommended me. My family was enthusiastic about it.
In our region we eat "Swabian Spaetzle" (German pasta) with much gravy, roastbeef and potato salad.

I tasted them  when I was a child (my parents loved this plate), but I think it's one of the few plates I don't really like. In Germany they cook them and add a bit of vinegar, but for me they taste still somehow "sweet". Moreover, I think you have to order them at the butcher's. Can't remember having seen them lately anywhere except in "tins".
Mac, it's not the pig's belly, but the beef's.

Phoenix, don't you go in an Italian restaurant from time to time? I love Italian food - they have such a variety of pasta, lasagne, cannelloni, pizza etc. etc. and I cook it, too. Our Spätzle are a different kind of pasta - hand-made yummi, yummi - you say????

Ah!! Teri,  Lemon Curd??  Have not had that for a very long time. Did not know it was still made.  Used to love it as a change from jam, though must admit I normally go for Peanut butter or Chocolate spread. Thank you for the reminder, I will look for it next shopping day:

that's true geese are stuffed as we call it to increase the liver required for paté.
Usually I have once a year a roasted goose.  However, frozen geese from Poland and Hungary are sold without any liver and innards at all. In Hungary we use to make a soup of the innards and we spread the grease (fat) on a slice of bread and eat it in the evening.
