.... you won't watch TV during the whole X-mas holidays, will you? What about singing in front of the X-mas tree, as we Germans do?

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: william on December 22, 2007, 10:31:47 AM
We will be singing round the xmas tree on xmas eve if the weather is fine, unfortunately it forcasts rain, we can only hope.
Xmas day will be party time after dinner is finished, I think we men have volunteered to wash up, you know the kind of volunteer, you you and you.

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: ansu on December 22, 2007, 12:15:22 PM
Why must the weather be fine to induce you to sing round the X-mas tree - mine is in the living room, so how is your saying
Whether the weather be hot,
or whether the weather be not,
we'll weather the weather,
whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not!
So, William, join us in singing "oh Tannenbaum, oh Tannenbaum" or do you prefer Silent Night?

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: william on December 22, 2007, 02:21:25 PM
On xmas eve the villages gather round the christmas tree in the village tp sing carols.Christmas day is for familiesto eat and play games together and to be merry.
does your fatner christmas say ho ho ho.
Long time since i heard that rhyme Terri.

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: ansu on December 22, 2007, 06:56:27 PM
In our region on X-mas we neither have a Santa Claus (he's coming on December 6th) nor a father Christmas, we have a Christkind (X-mas child) putting the presents under the X-mas tree. There's X-mas singing in the town in the afternoon, but the so-called distribution of X-mas gifts takes place in each family at different times (when you have young children you say to them that the Christkind is decorating the X-mas tree, too). When my children still went into the kindergarden the grandparents went with them to church and we decorated the X-mas tree etc.
I think, in every European country X-mas is celebrated in another way.

Post by: Phoenix on December 22, 2007, 08:27:40 PM
Sadly The feelings of Christmas, is disapearing, Not as we are used to. No Carol Singers, come around The Homes as before, Just in case it 'Offends' other people??

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: ansu on December 22, 2007, 09:32:41 PM
Phoenix, perhaps they do no longer learn Carols in school.
In Germany on January 6th you can ask the church to send you the so-called "Sternsinger" (star singers), i.e. the holy 3 kings.

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: william on December 23, 2007, 10:26:48 AM
Hi Pheonix, I have carol singers every xmas. the difference is, the parents have to go with them to see nothing happns to them, sad but a sign of the times.the parents usually wait a short distance from the house but where they can see them.

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: ansu on December 25, 2007, 03:39:37 PM

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: ansu on December 27, 2007, 01:02:44 PM
Those carol singers you are speaking of, what are they singing - christmas carols - normal English songs?
Please excuse, but I'm an old nosy person.

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: mac on December 27, 2007, 02:41:09 PM
I have seen quite a few programs with carol singing Phoenix,do you not watch songs of praise ?
I have also heard them at the supermarkets
and in the shopping precincts
and very nice they were too !!!!

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: william on December 28, 2007, 10:22:15 AM
Terri the singers who sing christmas carols in the street are doing it to raise money for charity.Children who sing carols at our door, sing to make a little extra pocket money.Bands that play carols are raising money to buy new instruments, uniforms etc. At the carol singing I went to on christmas eve, a collection was taken for the band funds.

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: ansu on December 28, 2007, 10:46:55 AM
I see, our Sternsinger (star singers) are collecting money for poor children in Third World countries. During Christmas time we have a lot of charity events (on TV, in churches etc.) The money is usually given to poor people all over the world.

Sadly we missed The Carol Singing, from 'King's College' at Cambridge. Reminding me of the past, again.

The Old Films are still shown!!  and Yes!! We still watch them and still Enjoy!!-- What else is there?? Not forgetting reading our Books:

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: mac on January 01, 2008, 01:06:48 PM
I like the old films because they seem to act better in them and the grammer is much better, not to mention the stories, and there is little or no violence,as for the sex bits they leave all that to the imagination !!
Talking of which I am going to watch John Wayne this afternoon but its not a cowboy film lol

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: Phoenix on January 01, 2008, 04:14:37 PM
HI MAC, THAT IS THE PROBLEM, WITH US OLD FOLK??
WE ARE MORE USED TO 'QUALITY' AND STILL EXPECT THE SAME?? OR EVEN BETTER STANDARDS?? ---- SADLY!! EVERYTHING IS ON THE CHEAP AND ANY QUALITY IS SACRIFICED!! -- WOULD BE JUST NICE, TO GETAWAY FROM VIOLENCE AND SEX SCENES. YUK!!
THERE IS JUST NO FORM OF IMAGINATION SHOWN, ALL OUT IN THE OPEN??  AH! WELL!! THERE IS ALWAYS --'SHARPE'AGAIN??
JUST REALISED?? HAVE MISSED 'SINGING IN THE RAIN'????

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: william on January 01, 2008, 05:58:06 PM
I think Pheonix you have got to agree that the sound and colour quality are far better today, its the contents of the films which are rubbish and of poor quality.
When a honeymoon scene was shown and when they went upstairs to bes,the man would take his jacket and tie off, the next scene they were having breakfast. We didnt need to be show what theyd been up to.As for the laguage, do the film makers thing it enhances the film, cos I dont.

Title: Re: personal pages
Post by: Phoenix on January 01, 2008, 10:31:40 PM
Agreed!!  Sound and Colour is far superior on TV!!
Do you feel at times, there is No Story in the film??
The Main points being sex, fighting and bad language!!
At least if watching a War film, or Western, maybe even, Mary Poppins etc: we know what to expect??
have to admit sometimes?? we are hard to please?? Maybe??Normally if we have 'recorded' we f/f the nasty bits!!

Hello Teri, You have raised a Good Point there!!
But the best laid plan's do go astray  ::) ::)  I am continually 'trying' to organize my time better, it just does not work out!! -- Maybe not enough hours in the day ??

Mac, that's true, even if you eat only healthy food (Bio food we say) and are fit like a gym shoe, it's no "insurance" to get old. There are such a lot of unknown factors and, therefore, I think you should enjoy every day!

Gambling on horse races - not very popular in Germany. True, we have some important horse races, but I suppose it's more for the "high society" than for the man in the street.

Seems I have had an idle childhood, I was only asked to prepare the veggies and fruits for being conserved during my summer holidays. When I was older I worked in a factory during the holidays to earn some money for a bike or dancing lessons, for instance.
