Now chris you need to expand a bit more on that , Why did you hate it so ?

I remember my first day of being taken , not the actual day of lessons though .

It was a very old victorian school ,  in the slum area of the city, it had very big windows which were too high to look out so all we could see was the sky , there was two parts to the school, the infants and the junior,In the infants was a spiral stair case that lead up to the bell tower, this memory as stayed  with me for i have a certain fear of these staircases because they are so narrow . I think also this is where i started to get vertigo .
I was taken to school on my first day by my father , i remember clutching his hand so tightly knowing i was going somewhere to be left . the school was only two streets away so it was a short journey . When we got  near to the school gates i could hear the noise in the playground. thats when fear set in and i started to cry , and held on tighter . My father told me to go join the other lasses in the play ground and   he prised my hand out of his .Shoving me through the gate  he shouted to these girls to take care of me till the bell went , and he  turned and set off up the street home , . i remember  shouting dad as he went and crying , but he didnt look back .

I cannot remember my first school in Dover, but I can remember the the home I was born in (still there my last visit)-- The shop in Dover cliffs that my elder sister and me bought sweets. More things still come to light as my personal computer (brain) loves going back in time.

FOR MY FIRST TEN YEARS I LIVED IN THE COUNTRY 2 MILES FROM THE VILLAGE SCHOOL. ONE DAY WHEN WE WERE OUT PLAYING, A MAN CAME AND PUT UP A NOTICE ON THE BACK DOOR OF THE OUTSIDE LOO.AFTER HE HAD GONE WE DASHED UP TO READ IT, JOY OF JOY IT SAID, THE SCHOOL WAS CLOSED FOR 7 WEEKS. AN OUTBREAK OF TYPHOID HAD HAPPENED IN THE VILLAGE,OF COURSE TYPHOID DIDNT MEAN ANYTHING TO US KIDS, WE JUST GLAD THE SCHOOL WAS CLOSED.IT TURNED OUT QUITE SERIOUS, 7 OR 8 PEOPLE DIED, SOME OF THEM I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH.THE  VILLAGE GOT ITS WATER SUPPLY FROM A RESERVOIRE IN A FIELD,A COW HAD FALLEN IN AND DROWNED, INFECTING THE WATER. ANOTHER WATER STORY TO FOLLOW AT A LATER DATE, WATCH THIS SPACE LOL

Cath we had the small bottles of Milk , and i hated it because it had been left out in the yard with the Sun heating it up ,I had a letter from mum to excuse me from drinking it .

I was thinking last night how when i progress from the infants to junior we started writing with the ink pens , those that had the little Nib on the end of a wooden piece , and we dipped them in ink wells ,I have a scar on my leg where one of these was used to stab me !
then we went on to Ball Point Pens  this meant no more messy ink stains .
The old type  desks went out as well at this time , the one you use to lift  the lid up and keep everything in , and we went on to large flat Tables , these tables are still used now .

I remember it being a very dark and dirty building outside,I suppose this was because we moved into a new flat after the war, when I was nearly 1.
There were camp beds there for us to sleep in the afternoon, only small tables and small chairs, in the infants/reception class.
I remember being told not to be scared when the sirens went off they were only testing them, all the teachers were lovely in the infants. When i went `up` to juniors we had to do some work lol,but we had a very nice headmaster and a lovley lady teacher who taught me to knit ! she used to read Enid Blyton to us too,and she read beautifully you felt the story was about you.
I have to say they were very happy years but not so for the senior school.

Such lovely stories here and so detailed too that I felt I was there!...So pleased you had your twin with you Cath that would have helped to take that big step for sure and not do a Monty and over the wall, hehe...Naughty Monty [smack]..

My first day at school was at the age of 5 in 1960..I can recall my mum telling me she will see me later in the day and when she took 2 steps away I ran to her and cried my heart out, obviously peeping out with one eye to see if it was working that she would take me home but nope I got grabbed' hehe... The teacher took me into a hall with a floor to floor cupboard, on opening it there were lots of toys, this cheered me up and I don't remember anything else from that first day until the bell rang and we all filed out and ran to our mums, I can recall my mum had a dark knee length coat with huge buttons!...

As time went by I used to help another friend as we were milk monitors although I never liked the taste of the warm milk as it would have been delivered early and left out until we all got it!..

We had a little tuck shop at school and when I was about 8 I was asked, due to a girl leaving, if I would like to help out at play time and run it, with this I felt so proud to be asked, but the other girl sneaked some crisps under her jumper which I knew was wrong but as she was older than me and she had said it was okay to do that and I must never 'tell' I did the same but silly me put a packet of the sugar puff crisps down my erm my navy blue knickers, hehe, just before we packed up, then we had to quickly get to class and I all did was make a 'crunch crunch' noise with every step, this I felt the whole school could hear so in class I sat down quickly and made every excuse I could think of not to have to go to the teachers desk for anything, and my oh my was I sore with this packet of crisps there!..Eventually at home time after putting my chair up onto the table and saying prayers did I go to the loo to take them out, although the bag was flat by this time and the crisps were like dust did I hide them at the bottom of a bin and I can honestly say I never did that again!...Phew!...

I remember PE time, throwing bean bags to each other and balancing on upturned benches having to walk the 'walk' on the beam that was there, that was fun!...

So many more memories I have and I remember feeling so proud when on times my grandma came to pick me up from school she was lovely!....

Thankyou for putting this here Chris as it has been lovely to look back in mind!...

No Story. Just cold hard fact. Remember the 50/60s. If those standards could be brought back, would there really be so many problems, as with todays way of life. ??????

I cannot remember my first day at the Primary school but I do recall the bad first day at the Secondary prison School.
The morning was bad enough with the sadist masters flexing their muscles and laying down the rules.
However, I was on the school field at lunch time when the giant fourth year 'jack the lad' and his cronies surrounded me.

He said he was a cousin of mine and told the tale that many years before when I was about 5 years old he had wacked my little sister for no reason.
He went on to regale his acolytes about how I waited for him behind the outside privvie and walloped him over the bonce with my dads spade.

He even showed us all the scar still very visible on top of his head.
He told me he had waited all this time to get even but I was so puny it did not seem worth it after so long.

We became good mates after this so the day was not so awful, happily our friendship lasted until the reaper called on him a while ago.
