Title: Tomato's Post by: admin on June 15, 2009, 07:11:17 PM Hello early birds !!!
I am attempting to grow some tomato's, I know nothing about them so I am throwing myself at you lot!!! Some advice has been given from another site, and I want to know if I am doing it right. I have grown them since they were 2" high, and now they are 18" high, I have some nice trusses appearing with flowers on. I have cut all the lower leafs off, what next folks? Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: Phoenix on June 15, 2009, 08:54:49 PM Tomatoes?? Don't cut the leafs off. Remove the shoots that grow between the leaf and stalk, with your fingers = Easy.
Don't let the plants dry out. When Tomatoes have 'formed' then you can Feed, with Tomarite. Need staking, as plants grow as they become Top Heavy, Give TLC and await the pleasure of Sampling. ---- Enjoy!! Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: admin on June 16, 2009, 09:36:33 AM Thanks Pheonix, I have only taken the lower leaf's off, I couldnt get the nozzle of the watering can in there.
Do you or any one think I have damaged the growth of the final product by doing this??? Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: macushla on June 16, 2009, 11:08:04 PM Tomatoes are tomatoes Chris !!! easy peasy mate,do as phoenix says and they will be great, feed them of course, and water them too,and you got tomatoes !!!!

Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: dalerite on August 03, 2009, 07:44:56 PM HI PAULINE, IN ALL MY YEARS GROWING TOMATOES I NEVER KNOWN THAT HAPPEN,THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF IS, ARE BIRDS GETTING IN ANS AFTER THE SEEDS. WASPS TOO ARE A CONSIDERATION. SORRY CANT BE MORE SPECIFIC/
Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: geordie on August 19, 2009, 08:45:19 PM I'm absolutely devastated all my tomatoes are diseased, I think its blight, the leaves have all curled up and died and the fruit has brown patches on it. I've had to take what tomatoes looked ok and hope the will ripen in the conservatory and get rid of the plants.

Have you not been watering and feeding ?? Tomatoes are so easy to grow, though I did not grow any this year (shame)?? Runner beans also need lots of water, it's been quite Hot and some 'dry out' -- Eve's son, has had an exccess on them and we have had a nice supply. S'lovelly!! Don't worry, there is always next year. Will be better then. PAULINE, 2 QUESTIONS, 1ST, DID YOU GROW THEM DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE GREENHOUSE OR DOWN THE SIDE 2ND DID YOU GROW CUCUMBERS IN THE GREENHOUSE. Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: geordie on August 21, 2009, 06:04:12 PM Grew them down the side William and yes I did grow cucumbers, what do I do now so that I can grow them again next year and what was wrong with them?

[HI PAULINE, ALTHOUGH THE CUCUMBERS WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL YOUR PROBLEMS, IT IS ADVISABLE NOT TO GROW THEM WITH TOMATOES. A COLD FRAME WITH PLENTY OF MANURE UNDER THE SOIL (FOR HEAT)IS IDEAL FOR CUCUMBERS. I AM ALMOST CERTAIN THE CAUSE OF YOUR TOM TROUBLES WERE LACK OF AIR CIRCULATION.IF YOU REMEMBER I SAID TO GROW DOWN THE MIDDLE, IF YOU GROW THEM DOWN THE SIDE,IT IS BEST TO TAKE 2 PANES OF GLASS OUT OF THE SIDE OF THE GREENHOUSE TO LET AIR CIRCULATE ROUND THE PLANTS.NEVER MIND, THERE IS ALWAYS NEXT YEAR. WE LIVE AND LEARN. Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: admin on August 22, 2009, 03:05:17 PM wow they are out standing, well done you ,, so whatS next then ,, Cucumber? salad :) Hi Tilly, thank you, I will next year be trying my hand at cucumber and a host of other things, Potato's being one, I am going to try and grow them in buckets, so any advice would be gratefully accepted. Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: tilly on August 22, 2009, 10:18:50 PM never grown tatoes in buckets before but have seen a good result from my nieghbours doing buckets
Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: geordie on August 23, 2009, 07:29:04 PM I dont have a vegetable patch so whatever I grow has to be either in the greenhouse or in tubs, I grew some potatoes in tubs this year they worked well, I had loads. I'm going to try growing some in bags in the greenhouse now, hopefully they will be ready for late December.
Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: Phoenix on August 24, 2009, 09:48:46 PM Pauline, With potatoe success, you will want to grow, twice as much for the next time. Good luck in all you do!!
Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: Marcella on September 27, 2009, 04:32:23 PM Well done Chris, you certainly have a crop there!...
Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: Phoenix on October 08, 2009, 08:40:43 PM I guess that now is the time to 'plan' for next year ???
Have not been able to keep it as good as the last one. But, have enjoyed watching the squirrel/s running around and mainly burying and eating the nuts. Natural television. Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: admin on October 08, 2009, 08:58:27 PM Yes certainly had a good crop, sadly all gone now, but there is always next year to look forward too. A friend has a greenhouse that she wants to get rid of, so I might have that to potter about in before too long, and then watch the green fingers come to life....(I hope).
Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: Marcella on October 10, 2009, 05:02:50 AM I wouldn't mind a greenhouse then I could gow plants etc!..
Title: Re: Tomato's Post by: Alice15 on January 04, 2012, 07:01:45 AM My first dog was a collie mix, we had tomatoe plants in the yard and one day my mom gave him one. He carried it around they yard for awhile and then gave it to me. Not a single mark on it. I think he knew we were supposed to eat it and he was very careful with it and brought it to me like it was his job to bring it to me. he was so proud of himself. he was one smart boy.
